Delaware Camaro Clubs...
« on: April 16, 2014, 02:29:49 AM »
We've all heard 'GaryC from Delaware' bemoan the fact that 'there's no camaro guys or camaro clubs or junkyards or ....etc ..  in Delaware' before...  :) ...

Well today I received the latest issue of the Chevy Classics magazine (from Ecklers).. which used to be 'Classic Chevy World' magazine published by the CCCI before  the *club* was sold and became an official business.   I've been a lifetime member going back to CCCI/CCW days, so I still get the magazine. :)    and in this month's edition (May 2014), there was a great article on a blue/white '69 Z28 from Delaware owned by Pete Jamieson of New Castle Delaware!   This article reminded me that I'd met Pete (and his gf Alison) at last year's Camaro Nationals in MD, and that he was from Delaware.. which reminded me of GaryC's moaning in the past .. :)

Pete and his girlfriend Alison are both great people, whom I very much enjoyed meeting last June.   I *think* he told me he was a member of this forum, although I don't recall seeing any posts from him in the past.   The magazine article also told the story of how he came by the Z28 (from his uncle)..  which Pete had told me about last June.   If Pete is on here, I Hope he speaks up.. so GaryC knows he is not alone there in Delaware.. :)

PS.  the article also mentioned two Camaro clubs which he is involved in..  'Delaware Valley Camaro club'.. and the South Jersey Camaro club.

GaryC (69z28)...  you need to get out more.. :)

I think he is trying to help out members in your area by presenting some info that may/may not be well known, and using you as a conduit to introduce the info. Gary just has a "Captain Obvious" busting your balls way of going about it sometimes....

Just remember any posts or info he chimes in with is coming from the right place with good intentions  ;)

I'm sorry Gary if you took my teasing the wrong way.    I was only attempting to put you onto a couple of clubs and a great fella in Pete who is in your area...   My apologies again..  :(

No excuses, I just don't usually go north from where I live, which by many is called 'above the canal'. I live in farm country, nothing city about it and for the most part is just a space were people driving thru to the beaches, stop to eat and go to Dover Downs track/casino for the races. That's about it. yeah, I don't travel much, but I do get out when I have a need to go to Baltimore or DC or maybe Philly. Don't mess around too much in Jersey though, not particularly interested in going there for some reason. I'm not even interested in joining a club to be honest with you, I'm a club all by myself with all the grandkids that come to visit. Most of my problems are just finding good used parts for my Camaro and locating somewhere to send small parts to be rebuilt since there really isn't anything local.  Believe me, the yards here are picked through, mostly current year cars. Oh yeah, the Hopper guy that wrote the Camaro book???, he lives in Georgetown, Delaware about an hour and a half away. I don't know him though.

His name is actually John Hooper, so if you do happen to meet him best to not call him "Hopper"... :D

I am somewhat in your boat though about the club scene I have never had a great desire to join a club, (but then again what club what accept me?), but you can be friends with guys that are in the clubs and trade parts or learn about guys with parts cars and so on. I know is the last few years since we have moved around a lot I have tried just to meet car guys in my area, just to stay in the mix, and so you know who you could count on for tack weld here, or borrow a wrench there. So I think the same thing applies with knowing your local Camaro guys, if you get in a spot where you need to see a guys car for reference, or get a second opinion on something it is good to know your local resources.

A good story: about a month ago I posted about the Temecula Rod Run, and I ended up meeting two somewhat new CRG'ers at the show (Zak, and Jack). Since then I have met up at A car show with both of them, and besides giving Zak a hard time about having a spoiler on his totally stock 67 SS Camaro, I have helped him little bit with a 383 swap on his 68 Camaro convertible. So you kinda get to of it what you put in.

Just food for thought

Yes, Hooper, I just misspelled it. There are some really good shows in the surrounding states if I want to go, but I just don't. I spend pretty much ALL my time with the family and it's rather large, or I ride my bike. Everyone I knew into cars when I was younger, Air Force day, are long gone or keep to themselves and their families. Then there are the kids with their 4x4's, ricers and the new Mustangs and some Fox bodies, it's Ford country here, plus the lifestyle is a bit different, lots a farms and lots of really small towns. If I hang with any crowd it's usually Harley guys, I have a ton of biker friends. I have an 81 FXS 1340 Lowrider shovelhead, all black, but I even just stopped riding it because of my knees, not so good these days. I go on bike runs more than any car stuff though. It is what it is.

Good info. Funny I have some older bikes as well, but it is a ton harder to find the guys into the older bikes. When I say older bikes I am talking 60's and prior, but now a days someone will say I have an old harley, and when I ask what year they have they tell me like 77 or 82, I just laugh because those bikes seem new still to me. I have yet to find a first gen sportster site that resembles this one. There is so little information, and you couple that with all the re-stamp motors and frames, which I would say is more rampant than guys re-stamping chevrolet stuff.
There is a small community of guys that are knowledgable, but similar to the Camaro stuff, I am the young new comer, so I gotta deal with 3 grumpy guys that are the authority on the bike.

The Triumph stuff is a bit easier because they put out less models during the 60's, and there happens to be a bit more guys and more literature to pull from.BUT again all the guys into it are retiring or have retired so I don't quite find the same exuberance and passion that I have for it necessarily.

It kinda goes back to "where are these hobbies going" conversation....

I have been after a "K" model for years, May have to settle for a newer bike. I'm thinking nothing bigger than a 800.
Bullitt, how far are you from long beach? There is a good bike swap meet every month.

I know this isn't Camaro related but it is hard to find anyone with older bikes to talk to on line. Most around here drive EVO's and such. I have a friend with 3 panheads, all suicide shift and a friend in Phoenix with a WLA military bike.  Every time I show up with my shovelhead, I get man I wish I still had my shovel, can't beat that sound. My first bike at 15 was a 62 Triumph 650 TR. Old school chopper, 10 over tubes and bolted/weld on hardtail large diameter back wheel, really tall sissy bar. What a ride. I had a limited edition 79 sportster 1000 in the 90's I think only 2000 of those were made. Been looking for info on it but haven't had any luck. Real wild decals (bright yellow and pink) with an eagle on the tank, I think mine was #1017 of 2000 if I remember correctly. The paint was a black cherry color. Do you know these sportsters? I bought my 81 FXS lowrider,15000 miles all original, frame and engine still married to each other, but changed things out to a wide glide with narrow forks, 5 gal fatbobs, vintage 81 wide glide forward controls, lowered 2" swing arm, retro fitted a CV carb. It's all black with a touch of chrome, kind of like the Night Trains. Now that is a bike I want. Still have all the original painted tin and the carb with original ham can breather. I owned 2 late 60's Arimacchi/HD 350 Sprints as well. Love that little bike. Both modified to look like bobbers. I still have a picture of one somewhere. We used to hill climb with them. Loads of torque. Anyway, not much riding going on for me with knee issues.

There used to be a smallish Camaro community here but those guys were into the late 80's and on Camaro's, mine was the only first gen. Lots of older Chevies but those owners are getting up in years and don't see them around much anymore. ALL the young kids thumb their noses on anything old in my neck of the woods. Like you said, where are all these hobbies going? I have yet to even see something like a pro touring or pro street car here. It's pretty bleak. What it takes to go to the out of state shows would put me in a bind financially so I just stay local, which is fine by me. My problem as I stated before is locating a rebuilder for starters, alternators, carbs and things like that. Anything mechanical is a wash unless you can do it yourself. We have a local PepBoys and a few independent shops but none of those will rebuild anything. Oh just go buy something new is what I always get.

There was one guy I knew years ago here in Delaware that had a 'K' model. I keep thinking 1957 or something like that. The year may be wrong but he did say it was quite a rare bike. Haven't seen him in a while but I bet he wouldn't sell it. I remember him saying he was looking for a part that was for that model alone. I had a friend growing up in Atlanta who bought one of the police 3 wheeler 45's in the late 60's. Cool ride, don't see them around either.

I am near Temecula, so maybe an hour and half away from long beach, roughly. (any traffic and it would be over 2 hours). Might be worth it if you have quality items there.

SO here is a pic of my 1966 XLCH. This is the first bike I got and it is still one of my favorites. It is completely stock down to the original tires and correct finish on the 1038cp bolts: kick start only, right side shift, adjustable magneto, and did the quarter in the low 14's back in the day, with no mods. A couple small mods and you had a hot 13 second bike. I believe it was the fastest production bike (with running lights) in 66.

I could definitely go for a 57 if it was somewhat complete, or the real gem I would like to find is a 58 XLCH.

I've never been fortunate enough to stay in one place very long pretty much all of my young life, have always had an adventurous sole. If only I could have saved everything like that that I bought, they are all but just a memory now.

Sweet Sportster, always been a big fan of spoke rims.

Nice bike, Temecula is a nice place for a cruise. You never know what you may find at a swap meet, at least a few hundred venders. The car swap meets are bigger.
