Calling all texans!
« on: April 15, 2014, 01:43:12 AM »
Ok this is borderline Camaro related, but I have no luck trying all other avenues so I thought I would give this a whirl.

I have been looking for a specific vintage floor Jack (for use with my Camaro), and after many searches and posts on other boards I gentleman contact me who has this particular floor jack. We have a agreement on price, but for the life of me I have had trouble trying to arrange shipping.  *Since the floor jack is older, the handle doesn't come off real easy , and seller prefers not to dismantle it.
I can find guys that are able to ship it but the cost way exceeds the cost of the floor jack. So I am putting a call out to all the texans to see if anyone may be able to pick up the jack for me, and then we can put together a plan from there. The floor jack is located right by Houston, on the Katy Houston line.

I am open to any and all ideas on this one.

Thanks guys

If the jack was in Austin, I'd grab it for you.  Have you looked at greyhound bus shipping?  I hear it's less expensive.  If the guy is driving anytime soon to Austin, I'll meet him.  ..or if I have a business meeting in Houston, I'll pick it up.  Either way, just keep my contact handy if it works out.

thanks for the response. So this is what I have figured out so far, even if you want grey hound to bus it to another destination you have to package it up in some way. The problem there is the seller doesn't feel comfortable unbolting the handle because there is a little more to it, than todays jacks.

Has anybody else had any experience shipping large items like a rear end ?

I think all he would have to do is wrap some cardboard around the base portion (to prevent the wheels from rolling in their cargo bay of the bus), and affix a TAG to the jack with the SHIP TO: and SHIP FROM: information... and I beleive Greyhound would take it..   or at least they used to take stuff like that..
PS. Greyhound does not require that items be totally boxed as most shippers do..

Yes, I think you could ship it just like Gary says.  Look at what UPS says about irregular shaped items.  Note that they will ship tires --as is-- as long as you get the label well attached.  Think I'd insure it....

UPS will not deal with a irregular shipment that is not on a stackable pallet, without adding big dollars to the price. Same issue with most freight companies that could even attempt it. The main issue is having to palletize it. I like Vons Idea of possibly having him get it on one of his next trips into houston. James (ko-lec-tor) suggested a plan that I think may work is if I can string together a few guys that live between houston and southern california and have them pass it from guy to guy until it is a drivable distance away from me to get. I think if Von is somewhat mechanically inclined he will be smart enough to remove the handle safely, then it will be easier to transport. So I think I may need a couple of New Mexico & Arizona guys, I know there is at least one CRG-er with a yellow Z/28 in new mexico (Hello Nick). Just have to kinda see who is out there on this one.

Please chime in if you have a trucker friend that makes that route, or have a sweet deal on freight, or live in the southern corridor of this venture! ;D

This particular one is a BlackHawk SJ-18R, But I would be happy with just the standard model SJ-18. They are just hard to come across. Here is a link that shows pics of one a guy picked up for a sweet deal:

The one in the link is the cheapest complete one I have ever seen, I saw a totally restored one last year a guy was asking $850 for. It was a way to nice/expensive for me, I still want to put it to use, (lifting my Camaro).
