Camaro Z28 heavy duty parts list
« on: April 11, 2014, 09:02:06 AM »
Would someone have the entire heavy duty parts list of 67-70 ? I only have one page (see here under). It would be great to have the others.

A Camaro enthusiast in UK sent it to me. I don't know where it comes from.

If those are PN's from the 69-72 timeframe, then perhaps they are taken from the 'green sheets', or ..
Special Chevrolet Equipment, High Performance and Modification document??   but the form is a little different in that document, as it has sketches as well..

This printing of the Chevy HD parts list was printed in "The Complete Chevrolet Book" in 1970.
This comes courtesy of Mike K (Swede70).

You're welcome, Eric. Here is a small list of Special Service Parts that were listed in the 1968 Camaro Z/28 brochure issued by GM.

You're welcome, Eric.

Below is a copy of the April, 1970 Camaro Heavy Duty Chassis Parts list as printed by General Motors. It is
essentially the same as what I posted from "The Complete Chevrolet Book" above but there are a handful
of part numbers listed in this one that don't appear in the other. This comes courtesy of Dave Horchler.

Jon in 1970 was most of the camaro's running rear disc brakes, and were they over the counter units or was aftermarket units allowed?

Yes, by 1970 most (but not all) of the cars running in the Trans-Am series were running a 4-wheel disc brake set-up. In 1970, the Trans-Am series started allowing aftermarket brake calipers and rotors. I know that Girling and Hurst-Airheart were some of the brake calipers that got used at that time. With that being said, the factory JL-8 type of brake components were still being used by some competitors and were popular to other teams besides the factory guys because of the more affordable nature of those items.

Jon- Do you know if the "4 wheel disc brake conversion" calipers had "quick change pads". The brake conversion set I got for my '68 Camaro back in 1970 had 4 piston calipers with pads that had a 90 degree tab the full length of the caliper opening (and pad), and they pulled straight out without unbolting the caliper. Just wondering if there was more than one variant. By the way, the inside mating surface of the rotors and the hubs both needed truing up as they had a huge amount of runout as delivered for some reason.

I need to quickly add that I could be wrong about this. Below is the current rear setup on my old car (front is virtually identical) and it may very well be what I put on it. Frustrating that I don't have detailed build photos from the old days.

Here is what is on the car now and may very well be the original factory heavy duty parts option. What do you think?

Sig, I have seen both variants where some people have run the rear calipers with the single pin in the middle and standard looking brake pads and other setups where the calipers have the bent pads held in with twin cotter pins. If you remember the car with the J56 style bent brake pads it would seem that somebody has changed the rear calipers over the course of the last several decades. That would not be surprising.

Yes, you are correct (of course) after some more research I figured out I had the "J50/J56" type dual pin pads and calipers. Used these type pads that are on eBay right now in fact.

Are those on the list posted above? Are those shocks dated?
Also what was the application of those shocks?
What were used by penske team?

The rear shock is dated 8 68 Koni p/n 80E 1953 front shock dated 8 67 p/n 80a-1914 , these are the standard road shocks. The Penske team probably used the double adjustable shocks.

thanks I see it now. I wish it would have listed an application. I know early shelby mustangs used Koni shocks on road courses, I wonder if these were more oriented towards that

They are single-adjustable. I've never seen a set of double-adjustable Konis with a GM part number on them. I don't think the double-adjustables became available until 1968 but I could be wrong about that.

Koni's were called out on the 68 Firebird section in my PHS docs I recieved for my HO 4 spd GTO. I had not realized they were an option previously. They are listed for factory billing, whether or not any were installed I haven't a clue.

Here's the 1967 Z-28 HD parts list, courtesy of Warren Malkin. The first item on the list is the rear spoiler which ironically was not available to any but a few select race teams in '67. The part number was catalogued so that it was legal for Trans-Am racing but was not available to purchase. Interestingly, when Joie Chitwood wanted a spoiler for his Camaro, GM provided him with a blueprint instead of the part so his car builder (Bob Tucker) had to fabricate it himself.

But how necessary was the blue print, since Donahue ran his spoiler extra tall?
Did it kinda give you a square 1 to start from and then you could modify it how you seemed fit and what you thought you could slip past the officials?

A blueprint would give you an overall idea of what it was supposed to look like. If you wanted to take liberties from there, that was a risk you had to be willing to take. I can't find a picture of Dick Stanton's car showing his rear spoiler but it is a little lower than stock height so I guess he played it conservatively.
