Well guys, long story short I got myself a case of the Cancer. I found 3 large tumors in my throat Jan 1st of 2013 while shaving. I checked the other side and of course there was nothing there. Had them tested 7 months later and they all came back malignant. A couple of you know about this already. I have thyroid Cancer. If it was just regular thyroid Cancer it would be a snap. While this would normally be a 45 minute to 1 hour operation, it is deep in my limp nodes and behind my clavicle. Which they can't get to. Went to a hospital in San Francisco and got the bulk of the bad news. Anyway, I go to the city tomorrow, then the 6 hour surgery is Tuesday at 6am. Then radioactive iodine treatments, and radiation after that. If all that doesn't work, then I was told to get my affairs in order. They gave me a 65% chance of survival. While I wish it was 90%, it's surely better than 30%.
I know none of you are my personal friends, but just wanted to say... just in case... it has been SO FUN hanging out with you all online. I am sorry if I hurt anybody. Take Care of yourselves and I will hopefully be back online after all this recovery and treatment is done with. Over and out... Danny

Danny,
Even though we don't know each other I have enjoyed many of your comments and posts since being a member here on CRG. I know that you are in a battle but it is a battle that you can win! I have an Uncle that is like a brother to me that is fighting the same battle, so your post touched me. They can do some amazing things these days so keep the faith and hope. As we all get older we start to realize how short life really is so we must enjoy and appreciate each day like it could be our last.
From one Camaro lover to another I want to wish you all the best and Godspeed. Please keep us posted.

God bless, and keep swinging ! Last year one of my co-workers discovered he had it in his gall bladder I believe--thought he was passing a kidney stone. Very stubborn guy..great firefighter ,Lt., husband and father. Gave him very low end on the scale. We heard/read 18-30%. His boy plays b-ball for Ohio State ( he was the one who walked on the court last year during play offs) so he put the surgery off a week or two to watch him play. They were not sure how the surgery would go...this was last year and he is back to work full duty. Cancer and heart attacks hit FF's way above average, the guys I know who immediately addressed the issue head on/ASAP are back to work or enjoying retirement. Mind you he put it off with the ok from the medical team. Keep in touch.

Danny....I understand your anxiety....seven years ago on March 1, I had surgery for late stage prostate cancer.  I still have some anxiety, even today, but I have managed to live an eventful life.  As a brother in the hobby and also as a brother in cancer survival, I hope and pray that you will also conquer and survive your cancer to live a long, eventful life.  Good luck and God bless you and yours.

That is rough news for you to hear.   Our prayers are with you.   Keep your spirits up.
My beloved wife Kimberly is a cancer survivor of over 13 years.   It was pretty rough for her in the winter of 2000; surgery, chemo, radiation.   Thank God she recovered and is cancer free.    There is not a day that goes by that I do not thank God.

I will pray for you.      Jim

As others have said before me, I really don't know what to say either. News like this impacts so many, including the family and close friends.  So on behalf of all my fellow CRG friends, we wish you, and your family the very best.  You will be on the minds of many from this site.

Hey Danny, I'm a stage 4 throat cancer survivor. Three years ago last thursday i finished my last radatation treatment. It's not an easy road but sometimes a road some of us have to travel. without the mercifull grace of God i would not be here today. I urge you to lean on Him and don't loose the Faith. I think you and i shared some thoughts back when i was sick. PM me please.

In Christ Love,
richard

Danny, I'm praying for you man.  I know how scary this is.  I just had Kryogenic Prostate surgery 6 weeks ago, still on road to recovery but seems to be going well.  Was watching it for over a year, they knew they really caught it early(only 5% in 1 of 24 samples)but #'s kept going up.  So decided to go ahead.  I will always remember one of the first things my Dr. said to me when he broke the news.  Cancer is that 1 word you never want to hear, it is very scary, even to the toughest of us.  My heart is with you man.  Best of Luck, and hurry back.

Well there are two of us so far ready to get involved, but how do we go about doing this? We'll need an address and room number for sure. It sure would be a nice surprise to show Danny we are pulling for him. Any ideas? I'd be willing to pay the bill and say it was from all the CRG gang.

So do we have a good address? Home or hospital? I was thinking going on line to get a plant or flowers, I'm thinking a plant would be better, it would last longer. I would pay for it and just say it was from all the guys at Camaro Research Group. What do you think? I don't have a problem with this if you guys think it's ok. Just need a good address.

A white page search in California only has a PO BOX 74  in Sonoma. For only one Danny J Cannuli. I don't think we'll get this done with out some solid address.

I assume he went to SF for the surgery, but I don't think hospital give out patient info anymore.

Let's respect his privacy and keep his address info off the forum. Thanks!

You're right Kurt.  I tried calling several hospitals in San Francisco (I'm in Silicon Valley) to find out Danny's status and see if he could have visitors yet.  The hospitals couldn't tell me anything due to patient privacy laws.  So even though everyone's heart is in the right place, we'll have to wait for Danny to check back in.  Hopefully, the surgery was successful.

HOLLY CRAP... Thank you all SO MUCH!!! What a HUGE out pouring of support. I never have seen anything like it. I don't know what to say..  ;D ;D

I guess I better start by saying thank you all very much for leaving this post up. I guess it's pretty non-related but I felt compelled as I enjoy being here with you guys.
The surgery was 6 hours! Recovery at one friends house for 8 days, then another friends for 4. With my Dads property issues, and his dementia, and other friends with heart attacks, computer probelms and the whole game of life, I have neglected to keep up with email etc. Talk about good friends... I was given 10K CASH to help with my bills. Don't have to pay it back!
The surgeon told me he could take a thyroid out in less than an hour with a steak knife. BUT, I had 3 big tumors that had to come out. And 20 lymph nodes. 18 had Cancer. So it was a central and a left node dissection. He said he hasn't had to cut like that in a long time. I am still pretty dizzy when I look straight up or straight down. I guess it takes a while to get all that medicine out of me that they used to knock me out. Crazy!! So missing a lot of work and trying to do some small jobs. I go on a special no iodine diet for 14 days. Then I take the radioactive iodine treatment and go in to isolation for 7 days. Can't be with-in 7 feet of anybody for those 7 days or they could get infected. Hopefully that does it and no radiation. I am rambling now, you all get it. Thanx and looking forward to catching up on all the fun posts on Camaro's. No worries on my info being private.
Daniel J. C. is correct. Address and phone number if it's ever needed not a problem. And I WAS and will be back at UCSF in San Fran. Nice detective work... Over and o... wait a minute, I am not OUT yet. Danny...

Thanx again, yes it is scary as it seems some of you lived it already, and in more ways then one. I actually take care of my Father about 35 weekends a year. And live in a 33 foot 5th wheel on his property. Gave up a HUGE place with a couple thousand square feet of dry storage. But he is 84 and my Mom died of liver Cancer in 04', so gotta do it. I can't stay in the trailer cause I am not hooked to the sewer. The tank gets pumped every 3 weeks or so. BUT, it could poison the guy, his helper and anybody close by. So it's off to my friends house again.

I don't think there is a Camaro in my future. At least not near. It was 100K JUST for the surgery, I have to pay 30K of that! And as you know, the list goes on and on. Never ends, good times, living the American dream..

Go Giants!!

Well tomorrow is the beginning of treatment. I will be dropping some test pills for scans and TSH and Hemoglobin levels. Then Wed. at 11am is more scans and testing levels to see if my body is Hypothyroid enough and ready. Then "Radioactive Iodine" Pill drop that same day at 3pm. Good times... NOT!!  Been on a no Iodine diet now for 16 days! Got about 10 more days to go on that diet. Killing me, I want a piece of cheese, bread, dairy, salt, salmon, shrimp...ANYTHING. I will take just a tuna sandwich, or a tomato and mayonnaise sandwich. ONE piece of bread!  After taking pill, full isolation for 7 days from any living being. Then a whole body scan on the 28th or 29th to see if we got all the Cancer, especially behind my Clavicle. I just went back and read all your past emails and got my self feeling much better. What a great boost seeing all that, as I really needed it. I appreciate it. I will have access to a computer, but not my own. I live in a 5th wheel and it's not connected to the sewer so no can stay here. Going to be at the girlfriends house, and she will go to the neighbors for a week. Boy she has REALLY taken care of me with lunch and dinner everyday for those 16 days. Lots of salads and avocados, veggies and SOME fruit. She really read that American thyroid association treatment cook book and made it happen. Whipping up and modifying anything she can to try and get some flavor out of it. Hours and hours of shopping and prep work. Anyway, she has a laptop I can use to check messages.
By the way, surprise... she seen me looking at cars online, asked me some questions and bought me a Camaro. Not kidding! When the title shows up I will share year, color, pictures and info. Car arrives in two or three weeks. But no info yet, ya gotta wait  ;) ;) ;D ;D

OK... so, please do not reply here. Lets save valuable space on this site for Camaro etc. related discussion. Here is an email address assuming ya wanna shoot me something. Take care, wish me luck, luv you guys... Danny

Good to hear from you again.  Sounds like a long road to full recovery, just be sure to take it easy and do as the Drs. say.  Taking it  easy is hard for me(I had Prostate cancer surgery Jan. 20) but just gotta do it.  That first month was hard (sitting on my hands, LOL!)  I'm back to normal now, I like to keep active.  3 month check up my PSA is 0.04.  Woohoo!!!!

Lots of people going thru some poop for sure. I wish you all the best! Email me if ya like. I will have Kurt remove the entire posting when this is all over to save space. Thanx again to you all..   djc1@sonic.net

  WELL…
Things seemed to be moving along well. I went to UCSF on the 20th and took 10 pills as prep for tests the following day. Needed to have a low TSH level after my 14 day low iodine diet. In those 14 days I didn’t wanna cheat so I only had 2 cornuts and 1 pistachio the whole time. No other salts. No other dairy, salts, fish, bread basically anything in life that tastes good. Lots of baked chicken and lettuce wraps with avocado and tomatoes. And a few other things if you get creative. You can have meat with very little on it. No processed food, salt free ketchup and so on. So the lower your TSH count is, the higher the number. 30 and they won’t treat you, as you have obviously been cheating. 40 and they will treat you IF they can get permission from your endocrinologist. Sometimes they do, sometimes you have to start all over. 50 is ideal and that’s where you need to be to walk right in the next room and get treatment. I was 53.6, so I was good. They WANT you to go into Hypothyroidism so your body craves iodine BAD. Then drop the pills and they go right at the Cancer and kill it, attacking bad cells only. RAI treatment has been around for 50 years! So on the 21st, I went back to UCSF and had some blood work done and hemoglobin testes and the like. Then a CT scan where I could not move for 25 minutes while they took pictures of my whole body. WBS = whole body scan. RAI = Radio Active Iodine. Only can blink your eyes. Then went into the next room and had an hour long meeting about the difference between exposure and contamination. And blah blah blah… Then took 2 heavy doses of Radio-Active Iodine Treatment. Then run down the steps and out the door. Then left there fast and straight home to isolation at a friends for 7 days. No riding on buses, sharing a cab, holding babies or animals or being around a pregnant woman as it could kill the baby.
Went down for another scan yesterday to see progress. My endocrinologist called me today with good and bad news. Good news = there is no Cancer anywhere else in my body. As there was a time where it was in a couple other places. Bad news = Cancer is still very present in my neck and throat area. Meaning the treatment did not get all the Cancer. I asked her if the medicine will continue working and she said not likely, as it is at its strongest at 48 hours. Then down from 100% to like 6 %. Then hangs around for a little longer and that is it. 8 days later and I am out of isolation and no longer a threat to anyone. Which means it’s probably done working. It MAY still have a little left to help eat away some of the residual Cancer, but not likely. Surprising as they gave me a VERY heavy dose. Had to put it in 2 pills. 15 thousand dollars a pill that the insurance does NOT pay for. Good times eh… So back to regular life for now, whatever THAT is.. and trying not to stress out. Not easy to do for sure. I was really hoping she would say we had a zero tumor count. I guess they are not really tumors, that’s just what they call it as a whole. So I asked her to give it to me straight and she said and I quote,” It doesn’t look good, and I am very concerned. I thought it would be Zero, or at least a lot less”   End quote…
So no way to start more treatment right now, as the body needs to recoup. Then back to UCSF on August 18th to see where things stand and another WBS. THAT scan will tell her whether or not I start another RAI treatment in 6 to 9 months. Basically start all over again. ( Or pinpoint Radiation in Petaluma, CA. I guess they go in you and plant little chunks of Gold inside ya. Then zap THAT area and the gold keeps treatment close to the Cancer. ) If the masses that are left are too big, they do NOT do another RAI as it will do no good, and it’s straight to pinpoint radiation. I was told to NOT get my affairs in order just yet. I guess at least THAT'S good news.
That’s it I guess. That’s the short version. Next update after August 18th? Danny

Guys, I have some spectacular news. I talked to my endocrinologist and she informed me that after all my last testing, blood etc. , that my tumor marker count is 1.1 !!!   ;D  ;D  ;D   I went from 29 to 22 at last test. Then we waited 3 months after the Radioactive Iodine treatment and these are the results. WOW, what a huge relief. There is a 34 % chance it can reappear but I am just going to say NO, it's gone or at least nearly gone and that's that... She wanted zero but said she would take a 1 or 2. I am deficient in vitamin D. So I have to take 50,000 units every Sunday for 12 weeks. And my thyroid replacement medicine is too strong and can cause fatigue. So I have to cut that in half every Wed. and Sunday... BIG DEAL... That's all peanuts in comparison to it all. Have to go back every 3 to 6 months for monitoring. But I'm not worried, cause I am a CANCER SURVIVOR BABY!!!... D

That means there is a 66% chance it will not reappear, and those odds, my friend, are very favorable indeed.  :D

Well I got some bad news. My latest check-up revealed the Cancer is still present. My Tumor marker numbers went the wrong direction.. UP.. They could not find it with an ultra sound. But 50 minutes in the MRI tube and bingo. 1.50 centimeter nodule in my throat, 2.5 inches or so down. They stuck a bunch of needles in my throat and the biopsy determined it is the same papillary cancer as before. Surgeon is pissed that he missed it. It seems to be the only evidence left. I can't believe it. I thought I was done with this shit!
He seems to think he can get it. He says he is pretty confident he can pluck it out thru the old incision. BUT, I have to sign a release to give permission to have a guy on standby, open my upper chest cavity if needed to give him access. About a 3 inch area. So not like a heart valve replacement, but STILL would suck for sure. Recovery for version one is a few short days, version two could be a month. Hospital stay for version one 6 hours, version two.. days!!
So... quick like a bunny they got me going in July 1st at 6am for surgery. Will be at UCSF at Parnassus. I was keeping it from everyone for a while until I knew for sure. I am just not ready for this, time wise, and financially. I have not even begun to finish paying my percentage of the first $70,000.
Hoping to push thru it all and come out with vocal cords/box intact, and no other issues. Hell, I gotta go to MCACN! I can't be fooling around with this, I got too many plan's.. LOL  ;D   Not ready to post/sell Raquel on eBay yet.
Ok, will have girlfriend {Suzy} post an update if we remember. I will carry all the good wishes that ya 'all posted for me last time. Over and out for now... Danny

Thanx very much.. Hopefully I will be all done with this at the end of the month. Blood test this week, then down to UCSF for results on Oct. 31st. If my marker numbers are still up, I may have to do another pill popping of the Radioactive Iodine, and one week isolation. Hope not...Don't have time for this.. Need to get ready for MCACN   ;D ;D ha ha
