1969 Hurst Shifter Rods BB
« on: January 15, 2014, 07:27:13 PM »
Going through Hurst Shifters today and comparing some un-identified rods with known rods and wanting an opinion or confirmation of what I believe I have. Picture of rods shows starting with top rod and every other rod (positions 1 top,3&5going down)compared with other set I have (positions 2,4&6). 1,3,5 are the original rods off my 396 car. 2,4&6 rods are another identical length and shape set which I believe are BB rods, too. The second set has more threaded area on each rod and the shifter is dated 3-69. My car is a 12B 68, shifter is dated 6-68. The length of rods are 1-2=14 15/16 in.3-4=17 11/16in. rev=9 1/8in. (give or take 1/16in on each). Shifters show back nut I believe (according to AIM)is unique to BB shifters. Closest shifter in pic is off my car, 2nd in background is 3-69 shifter. Anyone want to comment based on their car or experience if I am right and have 2 sets of BB shifter/rods? Oh yea, I did extensive search on the site before posting and could not find an answer. Only marking on rods is a "D".

Where are all my 396-427 Big Block bretheren? If you have an original/correct car, let me know some measurements and look at the thread length too. And compare your shifter nut on back. I am 99.9% certain on my original (born with) that it is BB correct. Other shifter and rods seem identical as well, except for added thread length. Just wanting some affirmation, thanks.

I wish I had my originals to help you out with. What a great find. I have an original shifter I got from Gary (69Z28-RS) to replace my missing one, but the rods I got with it were for a small block. I still need to source some big block rods....

Sarge... I have a couple of photos of the SB rods that you received with that shifter (posted below for comparison to Ko-lec-tor's BB rods).  Maybe you can work a trade with him if so?  :)

If he's interested, I'd be very interested in some kind of a trade. They haven't changed since you took those pictures.

I don't *KNOW* for certain what they were off of (since I bought them at a swap meet believing it to be a '69 Camaro shifter and rods), but I alsocompared them one by one to my original '69 Z28 rods, and they seemed to be identical... and the Jan '69 date on the shifter sorta says the same thing doesn't it.. :)
PS>  Actually I think any '69 Camaro SS with WB and 4 speed would have that shifter and rods.

My '69 Camaro Hurst Competition/Plus shifter body has these numbers on it 1090731H. Are those the numbers that the date code is taken from? If so, can someone let me know the date of my shifter?

Thanks, Warren
