Decode a 1969 protecto plate ... Having difficulty
« on: September 15, 2013, 02:54:10 AM »
Have the Protecto Plate from my 69.  Original owner apparently glued it down to one of the warranty documents.  Attempting to decode by reading the plate reversed with a magnifying light. I believe the numbers are correct.  I would appreciate any advice as to what the Protecto Plate tells about the car.  Thanks.  Bob

I think you misinterpreted at least one of the numerals, and possibly more.  Best way to 'mirror' is to take a photo and then mirror the resulting image.. should allow you to read it correctly.    The PP provides your VIN number, and the stampings on your engine, trans, and rear end ( believe) at least..

from the mirrored P-t-P:
From Protectoplate info:
Sold to Mrs A.W. Kirby on 5 June 1969

VIN:  124679N624455  69 Camaro, 8cyl Convertible, Norwood (OH) assembly  seq num 624455. likely built on Wednesday, 2 April, 1969.

C   = Carter Carburetor

4    =  build month  (April '69)

133  = option codes

Engine code  T0313HB which decodes to a 350ci / 300 hp engine build in Tonawanda on March 13th.   Your engine had a 4 bbl carb    and typically had a Turbohydramatic behind it.
Trans code:  Y9A31  =   Turbo350, built on  January 31, 1969.
Rear end code:  BL 0117 G   (3.07:1, 12 bolt, non posi assembled Jan 17th)..  If the code is BI ... it's a 2.73.

You mention that the plate "Original owner apparently glued it down to one of the warranty documents" here and on your TC post. That was glued by GM and or the dealer when new. That's the way they all came. Just thought I would mention that in case you were thinking of detaching it.

Good point. GM used the metal card in an older style credit card machine to imprint the owner and car info onto the service worksheet when they would bring the car to the dealer for service.

133 Option Codes are:
1- Power Brakes (J/50)
3- Radio Option U/63 (AM Radio)
3- J/52 (Disc Brakes)
I have these same codes on my 1969 Z/28.
