Partial vin
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:26:40 AM »
Having trouble finding the partial vin on my engine block.  The car is a 1967 rag top 327  3 speed Saginaw.  The tag on the block just ahead of the pass side cyl head shows T 0607   K. This tells me June 7 tonawanda plant   But what does the k tell me? It does not show a partial vin at all. It is possible that the block has been decked and the partial vin was shaved off.  Is there another location on the block where the partial vin might be. The casting on the back of the block drivers side shows 3903352. I believe this tells me it is a 327 275 horse.  I was told by the previous owner this is a numbers car and I would sure like to confirm this.   I also have the protecto plate if this helps. Thanks for any help.

Should be a two digit code. Chevrolet didn't stamp partial vins on low horse engines in 67.

Thanks for the response. Any idea where I would look for this 2 digit code?

Should be between the 07 and the K.  MK was the engine suffix code for a 67 L30 with a manual transmission.

Hey Mark. Thanks for your response.  I  don't have any letters on the stamping between the 07 and the K.  What does the K represent?

Doesn't represent anything, its half of the engine suffix code.  All 1st gen Camaros (and most GM cars from the early 60 thru 1970) have two letter suffix codes indicating what the engine is.  DZ is a 69 302 Z28 engine, MK is a 327/275HP L30 with a manual transmission, HA and HB were the two assembly codes for the 69 L48 350/300HP with either a manual or automatic transmission.  Theres literally hundreds of 2 letter engine assembly suffix codes used by GM over the years up to 1970 when they went to 3 letter codes.  There were single letter engine suffix codes used in the 50's and maybe into the early 60's but I would bet that you M infront of the K is probably just filled with paint or so lightly stamped you can't see it.

Jimbo, look at the protec-o-plate. The engine number is on there. It SHOULD be the same as the partial engine stamping you posted with the missing digit. My guess is that the block was decked during a rebuild and the missing number was not struck as deep. As cook d w posted, post a pic and the experts will chime in.

Jimbo,

Here's a link to all the first-gen Camaro engine application suffix codes...  http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#PadStamps

Thanks a bunch guys.  I will attempt to post some pics as soon as I can.  i am guessing the m (re: mk ) has been removed in the decking process.  I don't know if we truly appreciate the valuable info that is available at the touch of a key pad on this site. It is remarkable what the founders and stake holders of this site have created and maintained here.  Thanks you so much to you all and I feel very lucky to be a part of it.  I hope to some day assist someone with a problem or question as I have been helped.   Thanks again.  Jimbo
