Late 69 z28 build date?
« on: January 17, 2014, 04:14:11 PM »
Hello, I am offered a 69 Camaro, VIN 9N682363 and NOR148440(body number) with build date 10E. Its an X77 D80 car. Engine stampings are V0923DZ

Looking thru the CRG database for the VIN numbers ending each 69 month, I would like to see a build date for september and not october. The trim tag looks never to be removed. I am also puzzled over the low body number since it is a very late 69 build.

Do you guys see a difference of 4-5 weeks between engine build and car Assembly as normal?

Best regards Joern,

Hello Joern,
Something is off, and it confuses me also.    Based on your serial number, your car would have been built a week or two into September 1969.    The body numbers from 1 August '69 onward seem low because the body numbers were *reset* to 100001 at that point.   Your body number is actually 20,000 higher/later than my car (which has an 09C build week), which seems strange as well, but we've also been told that a LOT of body numbers were generated (towards the tail end of 1969?) that cars were never built for, so this *might* be explained?

Your engine build date is appropriate for a 10E build week car. but your car serial number corresponds to a 09A or 09B build week.   I'm not aware of anything that might explain that difference   ....... possibly the 'engine and data plate' came originally on one car, but the VIN doesn't match (ie. from a different car?).  Maybe one of the CRG guys knows of something unusual which might explain?
Note:  I just checked the body numbers for early production, and a 148440 body number corresponds pretty well to an Oct/Nov 1968 body, for which an 0923 built engine *might* still be viable for?  What is the block casting number and cast date on the back of the engine block?   There would still be a major issue between the body build/engine build and 'final car production for VIN', to cause a Nov '68 to Sep'69 delay in completion of a car (after the engine is installed)????   Is that possible at all??

Joern, it appears that either the trim tag or the VIN has been swapped. Can you post pictures of both? Also post a picture of the engine pad if you can.

As a point of reference, my 10C '69 body number is 112565 and the VIN is just above 700000.  Of course, there was nothing special about the drive train combination of that car.
