I have a new trunk floor and main floor and am wondering which way the six floor drain hole covers face? Does the the raised area in the middle of the drain hole cover face up....or down...or depend on which hole you are covering? Or does it depend on which direction the lip around the edge of the drain hole faces....up or down? My original floors and plugs are long gone and I don't remember.

All six drain holes in my original main and trunk floor were stamped with the lip around the edge facing down. On my repro floor, the drain holes in front of the front seats are stamped like the original, with the lip facing down.  The two drain holes in front of the rear seat are stamped with the lip facing up, however.

Each of the two drain holes in my new trunk floor have two screw holes at opposite corners. The other four holes do not.

So based on the info given, which way should I place my drain hole covers?....................And also, is it correct that each trunk floor cover is screwed in as well and seam sealed.....or should those holes not be there.

 I can only tell you from looking at my two '67's that they have the center of the plug facing up into the passenger and trunk area. Also, the trunk is only secured with seam sealer. I have never seen them screwed in.

I'm not totally certain I understand what you are asking, but for certain the covers should 'lay in' the locations from above (ie. from inside the car) so they don't fall off/out.   The indentation should go 'down' from what I recall..  ie. should be convex from below, and concave from above.

The plugs were installed dome-side-up after the prime oven, on the sealer deck (where all the sealer operations were done); sealers were set in the following sealer oven, followed by color topcoat.

JohnZ....    once again you've had to correct a 'quick statement' I made.. My apologies to anyone reading my error. 
My memory is such that I should have checked my photos made of my floor before posting..  Smiley    (but it was late last night - my only excuse).   
Attached below is a photo I extracted from a photo I made of my floor when cleaning... which clearly shows the concave side DOWN, (dome side up) as you stated..

Thanks to everyone for the info so far.

I am clear now that the raised center of the plug faces up.

I am a little fuzzy now about what the plugs should look like when looking at the bottom of a correctly finished car.

Did the bottom of the car have it's final coat of paint (not including body color over spray) when the plugs were installed?

If so, you would see the plug (in bare metal?) and the seam sealer.......both with no paint on them? Is this correct?

 The plugs were installed after the body was primed, but before the body was top coated. So you can have varying degrees of over spray to no over spray. Afterwards the trunk interior was painted and the plugs covered with splatter paint.

A little side note: Are you using new plugs and what is the finish? There are two versions sold, one clear zinc and the other a more galvanized look which IMO is more correct. When ordering one needs to call and find out which one they sell and in some cases they handle both versions so one needs to communicate which one you prefer.

I bought them from AMD already. I am holding one in the picture above. Maybe someone can tell me what finish it is....and how correct it looks?

It appears galvanized to me.. and looks pretty correct.....


Could be Gary but it does not have a definite hot galvanized look to me but for sure is better than the clear zinc ones that just look like shiny silver plates. This one is the closest I've seen but it would be nice to compare side by side.  Even these types are too shiny to my taste but I checked with people who hot galvanize to have my originals re-plated and they needed a hook hole drilled and the thin plate was going to probably warp due to the temp's. It seems the original plugs were punched/pressed out of hot galvanized sheet steel. Hard part to really duplicate finish correctly.

 That gloss look on the galvanized plug will dull over time just like the originals.

Here is another picture of mine from the other side. Not hot dipped galvanized looking......but not plain steel either.

The ones in my car (one shown in a pix earlier) have never been removed, did not get much paint in the factory (if at all), and do not exhibit any rust at all, not even surface rust, and that is pretty amazing unless there is some type of very good anti corrosive used in the factory.   they do not appear to be zinc, and I agree that it doesn't really have the typical galvanize look either.. so what are the alternatives for the original anti corrosive coating?  phosphate? or ??
