I am currently in need of a 4MV Quadrajet carb for my '68 396/325hp with auto trans. Any suggestions concerning what vendor's you think offer the best rebuilt/new units? I have heard that there were certain years or casting dates that were better than others. Any advice concerning this? thanks.

I also have a '68 396/325 with AT. I purchased my carb from Custom Rebuilt Carbs (http://www.customrebuiltcarbs.com) a few years ago. Not cheap but it is correct correct in every way right down to the date code. Ask for Phil. A very nice and knowledgable guy.

At one time, prior to using a well rebuilt Quadrajet, I would have agreed 100% with this sentiment.. Smiley .. if *performance* is your only criteria, then I would probably still lean that way.   But, I have to defend the quadrajet a 'little'..   If properly rebuilt, and set up, a QJ can get very good gas mileage for normal driving and still run very well when opened up.  One of the main problems with 'old' QJ's is that the throttle shaft wears in it's bore, allowing leakage, so make sure you get that rebushed and fitted, and there are some other 'standard' fixes that a good QJ guy knows when rebuilding them.

You may want to try some local shops that carry rebuilt carbs. I was lucky a few years ago that a shop in Indy had the carb I needed for a 1967 327. And the numbers on it matched what was called for. They were thrilled I called, bench tested it and sold it for under 200 bucks. It works like a charm.
