hi guys, i have a 1969 z28. i want to try to clean some paint off my firewall that is covering my PBT stamp. also there seems to be a #4 maybe in chalk ? any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Enamel reducer is what I used, this whole engine compartment had been rattlecanned during the 70's, Figuring it to be enamel I tried enamel reducer VIOLA....

FYI this is TEDIOUS AND NASTY work and must be done in a well ventilated area. IT TOOK 20 HOURS PLUS, however the original phosphates etc were beautiful, the car was certified survivor at the 07 Camaro Nationals.

It does look great.  Any helpful hints as to how you got the rattle can paint off without "erasing" stamps or chalk marks?

It seems like yesterday we were Vintage Certifying that car. Wow 7 years in June. BTW you did an amazing job cleaning and detailing the car while preserving the original finishes and stampings.

I will tell you that if it is on fasteners they need to be removed to be cleaned correctly. I removed the engine compartment fasteners one at a time and soaked it in lacquer thinner then in cosmoline then re-installation into the EXACT PLACE IT WAS REMOVED. I DO NOT THINK THAT YOU CAN POSITIVELY REINSTALL IN THE EXACT LOCATION ANY OTHER WAY.

Yes, James did some very nice work to preserve and revive the car while under some pressure to restore it which I'm pleased he and William resisted.  The preservation work has continued.

James, I knew you were good but dude I'm impressed.  Impressive work on the panels while preserving the markings. Good on ya!
