Anyone have ideas on finish of clip and piece staples are in? My stapled piece might have been a low gloss black but couldn't tell on clip.

Clip appears grey phosphate, support bracket is low gloss black, or so mine appears to be. Removed from my car in 1980, not a purchased part, so I know it's original.

Thanks. That's what I was seeing on mine. Wanted to make sure BEFORE I painted it!

I had two nice ones which were off low mile cars and they both looked like they were blackened or blued spring steel
one was stamped with a GI

X2 with James! Would not say it was phosphate and the closest description I could come up with taking James words is a type of bluish looking spring steel.

I dug up the pics of mine - if you look at the inner fold of the clip you can see that the (protected) area is simialr to dark grey phosphate, a mildly rough finish, defintely not blued or shiny in any way. I haven't cleaned it, it's still the same finish as when I took it off the Z in 1980, stored since. I can't speak for all of the clips out there, just my personal sample (and observation), so it's not a large sample size to correlate. Maybe more than one vendor ? Can't say -

I came across a picture of my clip today taken after I washed the firewall but before I removed the splash shield. Just for reference. George

Looks like mine, only cleaner -

It does remind me of phosphate - any sign of a stamp ? I need to see if mine is marked.

I dropped it in evaporust/safest rust remover, the plate on the top of the heater box which holds the air duct diverter is the same type finish, although most get painted or phosphated as well.
