Only two ways I'm aware of:
1)  The VIN IS on the side of the block, but is too difficult to see/read (one of Chevy's worst ideas to choose that rough cast area)..
2)  It had a VIN/stamp on the deck, was machined off, and restamped to correspond to the block's cast date.

3) It could have been special-ordered and bought over the counter as a "complete engine assembly" (same state of dress as was shipped to the assembly plants); these engines were only available while they were in volume production (August '68 to November '69 for the "DZ"), and had the regular engine plant machine code stamp, but NO VIN stamp, as they never went in a car.

The motor is at the machine shop getting checked for cracks etc right now,and has never yet been apart .   I was told this was bought over the counter by the person i got it froms friend, and he bought it new from gm to put in a 64 corvette, which is what it was pulled from    Alternatively, it could have been a assemby line motor that never got stamped. My white Z has a trans with no vin, the date matches the POP, an the original owner said it was never touched    It is actually a May 29 not may 26 as listed
