Was wondering what people use on metal parts and nuts and bolts to prevent rust?  My car really never sees the road and thought maybe a motor oil may help prevent this?

Any input is greatly appreciated ;D

I've read " gun oil "  ( CHP ) springs ,etc..   Plan on trying when I get mine back together as the rattle can black is long gone. Did do it's job.

What janobyte said.

If you plan on going back with phosphate or bare the gun oil works well and Ive also heard that WD-40 does the trick also.

Boeshield is the most often recommendation I've read here..    Recently I found out that Sears carries it, and with a good price, and I purchased some, although I've yet to use it...

X2... and when the directions say, "Use sparingly" on gun oil cans, believe them.  Otherwise, you make the part a dust magnet.

WD-40 works good for short term but requires constant re-ap. Use the gallon jugs with a spray bottle. I've got parts sealed in zip lock bags--works great ,when I'm doing a motor I'll spray it down and cover with plastic---works great. Seems to evaporate after a while if left in open air. I'm trying the gun oil.   Even my boats outboard I soak with WD-40 and as long as covered and somewhat sealed , works great. I'm a car guy and won't dock !

I have been using Birchwood Casey Dri-Touch for over 25 years. It goes on wet and dries to a protective film that doesn't attract dust.
I use a small artists brush for application from the nuts/bolts to the phosphate coating on the hinges and hood latch assembly and Z-bar.
I used it 2-3 times a year.

I have used several different ones. I used Rust Prevention Magic on all my phosphate bolts prior to assembly. On my coil springs and rear leaf springs I used Sharkhide. It goes on like lacquer thinner and leaves a non dust collecting clear coating that soaks into the metal and leaves a natural look. I have several pictures posted on the CRG with these parts coated with sharkhide. Do a search for posts under my name and they should show up. If they do not show up send me an email and I will send you some.  Thanks, Scoop

I also used the sharkhide on my drag ling, tie rods, ball joints, driveshaft, u joints, clutch fork and bell crank assembly, hood hinges, and hood latch assembly parts that were phosphate.  Thanks Scoop

Interesting Scoop! Will have to get some of that!  I use 'rust prevention magic' and think it works great on phosphate bolts and especially castings (suspension parts, yokes, etc.) but even have my restored drive-shaft coated with it. To test I sprayed raw castings with water after coating and months later the only hints of rust were in crevices that I missed in the coating process. Google "rust prevention magic" for more info. Cost $35 a jar and it goes a long way.

I used Rust Prevention Magic on all my phosphate bolts.  I have used both products on different parts. Thanks, Scoop
