68 Radio
« on: September 02, 2006, 02:21:32 PM »
Does anyone have a good picture of an original 68 U63 or U69 (AM or AM/FM) radio?
Would appreciate the help!

Here is a picture of my 68's am/fm. Do you need a picture of the radio that is not installed?

I have my 69 am/fm original radio out of the car and on the shelf.  If you conclude they are similar, be glad to shoot a couple of pics for you.

No, installed is fine.  Thanks.
If either one of you (or anyone else) could post a picture that is more close up that would help.
I really appreciate it!

That's perfect! Thanks, Ed.  ;D
Thanks guys.  ;D
In case you haven't figured it out. I'm proving a point to a friend.  We've been arguing numbers and descriptions for days, but a picture is worth a thousand words!  ;D

Phil,

You're referring to the tinting of the lens right? The Camaro lens is tinted and the Firebird is clear. Actually, the picture I posted doens't show the tinting very well. It's a bit darker than it looks. The flash washed it out a little...

Ed,

Yes on the tinting, but also the general look...

I've got a friend who thinks his radio is original.  But in several ways it doesn't look right --including the clearer Firebird look.  I think the thing is a very nice repo.  He's going to show it in a couple of weeks.  (It looks and sounds great, so obviously, he does not want to rip it out!) Lucky for him I'm not juding that one!

I'm also on the look for one myself.  (Right now, I've got an obvious repo.)  At that same show, I'm going to stroll the swap and vendor aisles, looking for a bargain.  In my case, it doesn't even matter if it works...

Thanks!

Phil,

I didn't even know they were repoping these things!! How does it look?

And by the way, I'M looking for one also, but don't want to have to sell my first born (and possibly my second born) to get one!!

Who's repopping them?

Ed

This was brought up a few years ago, and Bill Glowacki (CRG member) wrote that the Camaro Lens was tinted and the Firebird Lens was clear. He was referring to a 67 but I belive the 67 and 68 were the same tint. HERE'S THE THREAD regarding this.

I also did a search on Team Camaro and found a few other threads stating the same basic thing, with one regarding a 68. (I can't prove this right now because the forum is coming up "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later"!!) However, I was always under the assumption that the Camaro was tinted and the Firebird clear, but since I've never actually seen one in person, I can't say for sure. The only thing I DO know is the P/N for the 68 Camaro AM/FM is 7303241 and the P/N for the 68 Firebird is 7305582.

Hopefully, someone can clearify this for us.

Looks like the Team Camaro forum is back up so HERE'S THE THREAD regarding the tinting of the lenses.

By the way, mr396, where are you in So Cal? We might be neighbors! I'm in Murrieta if you know where that is.

That is soo cool,  we are neighbors, I live in Wildomar. Look at this old ebay ad, my am/fm doesn't look like the firebird green tinted one pictured. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-67-1968-68-Camaro-Firebird-AM-FM-RADIO-AND-SPEAKER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ80741QQihZ012QQitemZ220019518759QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Mr396, I may be mis-speaking about the radio being a repo.  Ed has me thinking it is a Firebird radio --that looks brand new. (I wonder if you can refinish the face plate, etc and make it look new?)  He doesn't really know where it came from. (There's absolutely no history on his car, and for all we know, a previous owner got it off Ebay. It's one of those cars that looks original, but when you start checking numbers, it's not...)  But now that I have the part numbers, I may offer to help him pull and check it --after he shows it.  If I find out anything worth noting, I'll let you know.

Come to think of it... do radios have the part number on them? Where?

Thanks for the info. Ed!

I'm already looking for parts for a couple of fellows in Charlotte in Sept.  Maybe, I'll luck on to somebody with a truck load of radios who doesn't know what they're worth...  Not counting on that!  ::)  ::)  ::)

Yes there are part numbers on the side of the radio. Delco Model # for 68 Camaro is 7303241.
Delco Model # for 68 Firebird is 7305582.
