Fader knob
« on: July 19, 2013, 12:55:33 PM »
The fader knob on my radio is stripped and I went to NPD to buy what i thought was the right knob. What I found out is that the bass/treble adjuster is not the same as the fader. The fader does not have a slot that the tang on the knob slides into like the bass/treble. My fader switch is round with a small tang that is parallel to the circumference of the switch. It looks like someone in the past just filed down the tang on the knob so the switch would work. I am stumped by this simple issue. Any one know where to buy the right knob or is my fader switch different?

Thanks

Lawrence

The fader control (P/N 7309211) used a knob with a tang on it so it would "grab" the shaft and turn it, resulting in music being directed to the front or rear speaker. I'm not sure what you mean by "not the same" since,if you look in the AIM (UPC U80, sheet A2, item number 2 - Knob, P/N 3954239), is the same as the bass/treble knob (UPC U63/U69, sheet A2, item number 11 - Knob, P/N 3954239). Sounds like someone has modified your radio.

Ed, here are pictures of the fader. Should that tang be removed and maybe it was not stamped out when produced?

That one looks different than the one Jim at HEARTBEAT CITY sells. You might want to get in touch with the ebay seller of THIS FADER and have him take a picture of it with the knob removed. Then you can compare what you have with his (Note that the Chevelle, Camaro, full size, etc... all used the same fader).

The fader knob on a standard U63/U69 radio is just a spacer, it has no tangs inside it because it doesn't do anything, it just sits there filloing the gap between the dash panel and thetuning knob.  You need the same inner knob as the balance/tone knob on the left post of the radio.  Both outer knobs are the same.

I tried that and it won't fit because my fader is different than the bass treble. Check out the picture.

Hopefully the attached pics help. I have two versions of the 7309211 pictured here - one is metal bodied, the other is black plastic. Both showed up in 7309211 boxes - both are identical in location/functions, the only difference I see is the body material.

The knobs pictured in the second thread are marked (2 ea.) 3954239, as Ed mentioned; 1 is marked 3976296. All three work with both faders. My '68 was equipped with a rear speaker, marked on the dealer invoice, so I hope the knob theory is the same for '68's as one of these is destined to go back on the '68 Z.

Steve

Steve, thanks so much for the pictures. It appears that my fader is different than yours and yours looks like what should be installed. My fader does not fit the knob that should be installed. My car has the rear speaker and has the old blue wire to the rear of the car. I am assuming that the car came from the factory with the rear speaker and the fader failed sometime in its life. Then replaced with the wrong type? Thanks again.

Likely the case. Your switch looks correct, except for the external tang. I can't see the number clearly on the switch, but it appears to be a GM part number, or at least from the same subcontractor that supplied them to GM (unless they were supplied as a pure AC Delco construction).
Heartbeat's switch is advertised as an original (used) switch, and appears similar to my black-cased one. They are still out there - keep looking and one will pop up if you need to replace yours.
