Interesting that the ink date code stamp is 3 digits (189) on the first tach pictured, and 5 digits (197 69) on Gary's tach. Is that a format change during production, or is the first one possibly missing the '69'?

That is interesting.... Steve's 7K tach from his late 09A car had a julian date of 189 (no year?)...  which is different than my 8K tach on my 09C car which has a date of 197 (69)..  His tach was either built 8 days before mine, but with different redline and different date coding, OR was it left over from July of '68?? and used in Sept '69?  Is that possible?  OR were there more than a single vendor involved for these tachs??   I cannot believe the same vendor was building two different designs to the same spec at the same time... such a company would not be in business very long...

My 9A has a 6000/7000 .

.f 68 or 69?

1969

Steve,

Do you know the date on the back of it?  I thought they had switched to the 6000/8000 well before Sept??
My 09C car has an 8K tach; date on the back of it is '197 69'   which corresponds to July 16, 1969.  This is consistent with most other parts on my car, except for a few dated almost immediately in front of the engine assembly...  see photos.
ps.  I also noticed there's a label on the instrument cluster itself with large NN code (any idea what this is for?).. along with a speedo pn, and tach (with hand note - illegible unless it might be '8')??

Gary, I've never looked for the date code on the tach. I know the tach is "technically" incorrect, but I'm not sure why or how it happened. If the date code doesn't correlate to the build date of the car then it may have been replaced at some point. I believe the 7k was in the car when I purchased it because I vaguely remember comparing it to my friends other Z's in the late 70's. I'll get the date and post it later...

Steve,
It's going to be difficult to see I think when the car is assembled..  mine is apart, so it's easy for me to check such things.  Maybe (if you're limber/flexible), it might be viewable from below the instrument panel?  but if you can't .. don't worry it until it's easier.
