69' Camaro Z28 purchase help PLEASE
« on: May 08, 2013, 12:38:44 AM »
Im about to pull the trigger on a 69' Z28 and I need help verifying its true originality. Before i dish out all this money, i want to make sure the car has a full #'s matching original drivetrain and mostly original interior, etc. I realize some parts must be replaced but the important ones and the ones that make the car collectable need to still be there. The seller seems to be an honest guy but you just never know. I def. plan on driving the 4 hrs to see the car 1st before purchasing but before i waste my time i'd really appreciate it if you guys help me out as much as you can. Below i will post pics of the car and all the info he wrote down for me to check. see below and let me know if theres anything else i need to ask him to send me.

THATS ABOUT EVERYTHING HE SENT ME.  IF THERES ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD ASK HIM TO SEND ME PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE IM GETTING A MATCHING NUMBERS CAR WITH MOST ORIGINAL PART, ESPECIALLY THE IMPORTANT ONES.  THANK YOU IN ADVANCE AND IF YOU RATHER CALL AND DISCUSS MY NUMBER IS 337-257-6587

Id' want to see a good closeup photo of the trim tag, and for sure a great picture of the engine Pad... as well as engine cast date, and transmission stamped codes...    it looked like a pretty nice car, and obviously a lot of $$ spent putting some reproduction items on it (chambered exhaust, headers, repro battery, etc...)

I'd want to see a picture of the engine pad stamp and make it big enough you can see details not just the stamp. The underside looks like it's had a lot of spray bomb restoration work. Don't take me wrong but the underside looks rough and if it's supposed to be restored and they left the bottom like that then I would question the quality of work on the rest of the car.

Is it in the CRG database?  VIN appears to be 124379L521173.

Yes, it's in the db. It was on ebay back in November of 2011 for 49k. At that time it had a 30 year old paint job. Not sure if it's been repainted since, but it looks very nice for 30 years old. The engine has been restored but the interior is original. That's about all we have in the db regarding the car but Kurt may have additional info.

i dont think the underside has been sprayed, ill have to ask tom.  i was told the car has only been repainted one time and has never been taken off the frame.  only some frame on stuff.  he did say the interior was original

The gas tank and springs have definitely been painted along with other parts of the rear end. The rear end housing sure is shiny and a different color black than the rest of the black for some reason if it hasn't been painted.Looking at the lower section of the tail panel it looks like it's been hit and they didn't finish their bondo work under the gas fill hole. Also looks like the tank has a dent right in that same place.

Since it's in the database, is there any documentation available for the car ? P-O-P, dealer invoice, title histories ? If not, depending on the state, the DOT might be able to give you paperwork on the car for a fee - I got full docs on two of mine verifying the Z options and all options ordered with the car, plus the MSO's from Chevrolet to the assigned dealers for a few bucks (lucky because both cars were sold new here in my state, the DOT photocopied and microfiched all of the paperwork). Worth a shot, although nowadays they will blackout the names of the prior owners due to the Federal Privacy Act, which would be no bad deal if you can document the rest of the car - that ends a lot of speculation about what the car started life as, then the only thing you have to worry with are restamped "original" drivetrain components.

All in all, a pretty car - a few details need correcting, but it looks like a very good and nearly finished Z. I wouldn't kick it out of the garage for leaking fluids. Good luck on your deal.

Just my opinion -

Looks like a nice car, although it's a pity about the repaint and the incorrectly-done rear stripes.

Yeah and you can easily paint it the original color and have correct Z stripes.  All it takes is talent and cash. :)

Hey, again, and as always, I am still learning... But this tag looks like a re-pop to me. I am not the expert. But you better wait for someone who IS before you go for it. JMHO. I tried to modify the cowl tag picture so it can be seen better.. Danny

I don't know if it is a re-pop tag or not but there aren't any reasons to re-pop a VN tag.  It only tells you the build date, interior and the paint.  In this case, the color of the car doesn't match the tag.

Tag looks consistent with VN-assembled cars, including mine.

Tag looks OK. Engine code stamp looks OK.
Car definitely has been fluffed.
