Valve stems for Rally Wheels
« on: November 07, 2005, 07:28:53 PM »
What is the correct length for the valve stems on the 69 Rally wheels? Did they originally use the DILL caps in 69 and what is the correct number on these?

Don't recall the length offhand, but they had "Dill 627" caps with the little "tit" on the end (the same valve stems and caps are still used today on GM and Chrysler products).

Reviving an old thread relating to a question about assembly line correct valve stems and CAPS.  Are either of these examples (#1 or #2) assembly line correct for a '69 Z?  As shown in the photos, #1 has fine ridges that extend onto the crown of the cap, a less pronounced tip and proud base.  #2 is a more commonly seen style with the Dill name in capital letters moulded into the crown, wider, further spaced, flatter ridges and a taller tip with a concave center and a level base rim.

627 cap is seen here, still around as JohnZ said.  Looks like your #2 I believe.

Cap #1 is the factory assembly line original. Cap #2 is your every day seen cap.

In late 60's NCRS Corvette Flight Judging, the Dill 627 cap with the coarse ribs and the "tit" with the indentation is considered correct; the one with the finer/longer ribs may be from a later era.

The Dill might be considered correct only because they don't have the originals or know what they look like. Cap #1 is CORRECT!

The Dill might be considered correct only because they don't have the originals or know what they look like. Cap #1 is CORRECT!

You may be 100% correct but JohnZ is also correct with the info he communicated. From my limited experience with original caps I have not noticed your example but have a few of John's examples.
This cap came off a 68 DF wheel with a Jan/68 dated wide tread Goodyear tire.

This cap came off an original 69 SS Camaro Oct69 built car with the original tire and the cut valve stem/cap combo came off a 12/67 dated DF wheel. Both caps seem to be examples of what JohnZ posted. Additionally, NCRS is a great source of well documented and accurate info!

Chick,
When you get a chance look at the original YH spare that Skip was selling. It has my style of cap. Maybe Steve Shauger can chime in, I'm sure he knows since he  judges original cars and possibly has come across this before.

Yep, will check out Skip's original wheel valve stem cap. Also, pulled an original 68 corvette wheel and tire, and the cap seems to be the same as #1 listed above, the ones you have.  It's seen better days (chewed up on the end) but it does seem to match.

Reviving this thread

The initial question posted on this thread was about the correct length of the valve stem for the 1969 Rally wheel which was never actually answered. I'm finishing up the restoration of a set of YH rally wheels for my 1969 RS/Z project and am looking for the same valve stem length information. I've seen references to the Dill 418 stems (2") however would like to know what is the correct stem length and if possible a source for them?

Thanks Mike, LI Corvette seems to be a good source if it turns out the TR418s are the ones to buy.

Let me know. I'll be going to LIC soon to get some items and I can pick them up so you don't have to by a minimum.

Thanks Mike, very considerate. I am looking forward to confirmation of the valve stem length.

I just finished painting my rally wheels today and am looking forward to mounting the tires in a about a week once the paint has had some time to cure. Can anyone confirm the correct, original valve stem length used in 1969?

I haven't received much input on the question about the correct valve stem length for a 1969 Rally Wheel so during my research I came across an installment from Chick's (68camaroz28) build thread on TC where he states: "I have three rally wheels dated late 67 and 68 (two DF wheels & one 15X7 vette) have what seems to be the original valve stems. All are the same size and have 'TR-413' valve stems made by Dill."

Sorry Lloyd, did not see this thread until just now! Here is one of the original valve stems that came out and what I've observed on many wheels and the length I used on our DF wheels.
