68 black SS horn cap
« on: April 04, 2013, 01:09:08 AM »
My horn cap has always been brushed metal with a BLACK circle with WHITE letters, I neither see it in the steering wheel reports or in any repo catalogs. The car is a 05C LA with a standard 712 interior. I have not poped it off to check for a part number.
68 SS onwers, what do you have? I have pictures but can not post.

Here's the cap (see below).

Sorry Victor. I don't know what it came from. Is there a casting number on the back?

Hmmm. I'm getting an error that the uploader folder is full, so I can't attach the picture. Hang loose gents and I'll get Doug to take a look.

Could it be a BB thing? To match the tail panel.

Ok, here's the picture (and no, it's not a big block cap).

3928352 is for a 68 Nova 6 cylinder (except deluxe wheel or wood wheel) or V8 (except 350, deluxe wheel or wood wheel)

3928354 is for a 68 Camaro RS (except 350 and 396)

Looks like you have the correct cap, but someone replaced the center emblem with an SS emblem.

Hmm, intersting. remarkably similar to the polished 67 cap in the steering wheel report section noted as incorrect.
Do you know anything about that 67 car?

No, that's a picture I took a few years ago at a car show to use in the report to note the incorrect "SS" cap. The picture's not that great because I had to use my cell phone! An old Motorola Razr V3 from the early 1950's!!

Sorry.

Those "early, numbers matching" cells go for a lot of $$$ on E-Bay

This weekend I found another brushed, black button/white "SS" horn cap The same as the one pictured above. The guy selling said it was from a 68 Camaro (he had other parts from the parted car as well, nothing else I wanted, cost me $5) This has a part # of 3928345 BM.
 ED,
can you please run that number whenever you get a chance.
 JoeC,
I read a post from you from November 2009 with a similar cap however the picture was no longer there.
do you still have the cap? is it the same as pictured above?
I now have two, JoeC has one, Ed has a picture of another in the report.
There seems to be something with these caps, If somebody is creating these as suggested, they sure are doing a perfect original job. I have had my car since June 1980, found another yesterday. made the same as all other caps I have seen. I am not so sure the research is over. I sure would like to hear from other 68 SS owners as to what color, plant, build date, and engine.

Victor, that part number (3928345) doesn't come up as anything. Are you sure you wrote it down correctly? If it's actually 3928354, it's the same as I posted above.

Ed,
That was quick. Yes, I noticed the 54 vs 45 also and had to double check but that is what is stamped, the 3 and the 9 are a bit larger font than the uneven 28345 as if it was stamped at different times. odd. I will send you a picture when I find my camera. Thank you.
