Just bought a 68 SS and need help
« on: March 12, 2013, 04:40:32 PM »
Just traded a mustang project and got my hands on a 68 Camaro SS w/ 4 speed. I am missing the engine and need to know if there is a way to tell from the VIN what engine was originally in it? It has the 4 speed Muncie and 12 pt Rear end

Not from the VIN, just whether the Camaro had a L6 or a V8.
Fastest visual check determining SBC or BBC is the heater core nipples location.
If on the firewall next to the trans tunnel = SBC
If on the heater cover plate above the frame rail = BBC
Next would be the frame mounts for the engine, SBC = equal helght in both sides; BBC has pass side shorter in height from drvr side.
I think

But most of all, correct year.

Is there a site that will decode the VIN and any way to run the Vin to see what engine was original?

As Everett stated not by the VIN sounds like a nice car, good luck, starting off with an SS is always a good start. Darrell

Is the Transmission off set? if its out of the car check the mount. SB's are centered BB's are off set. if it has original paint  the rear panel will be black (or could be painted over, look under the tail light bezel fot black paint).
   Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Yep I am excited about getting it as it is orignally Corvette Bronze. Trans is out of car right now so we can check that. I know Pontiac has the PHS which can run details based on VIN. I was just curious is Chevrolet does the same for Camaros? Id like to know for sure what engine was in it

Welcome aboard, and Good Luck with your project.  Sounds like a nice car.  Chevrolet did not keep those kind of records.

Thanks I have two 68's right now and the SS is the one I am keeping. The other one is a parts car and a friend of mine is helping me fix mine on some trading for the parts car!

Scott. Kurt forwarded me your email you sent to him since I take care of the 68's in the database. 68's are hard to prove when it comes to which engine the car originally had. There are lots of clues, so you have to start there. If the transmission is original, it'll have a partial VIN stamped on it. Post a picture of the VIN and the axle code, and we may be able to decypher what you have.

Scott, the number on the Muncie isn't complete. Can you double check it? It shoudl be something like 18N416859 or so. There should also be a suffix code on it like P8D24 or such. Can you check that also? Finally, were you able to get the rear axle date and suffix?

Ill check it again. That was all I saw on the trans but let me double check. Where is the axle code located exactly?

HERE'S a picture of where to look for the transmission info (the VIN should also be in that general area, if not then probably on top of the transmisison), and HERE'S a drawing showing where to look for the axle info.
