1967 SS 350 Air Cleaner
« on: February 24, 2013, 02:52:24 AM »
Can anyone confirm the diameter of the SS350 air cleaner. Infomration on CRG indicates it is 15.45 dia. All afftermarket air cleaners are 16" or larger and do not clear the coil. Any thoughts?

I don't know how much this is going to help you, but here goes. Recently I've been going through parts in my basement to sell, some of which I haven't seen since the 70's. Anyway I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) except for the chrome lid the L48 and the L30 air cleaners are the same. I found two L30 air cleaners a '67 I believe and a '68 both for a manual transmission. The '67 base measures 16 5/8 in. outside and 16 1/8 in. inside diameter. The '68 base measures 15 1/4 in. outside and 14 3/4 inside diameter. Hope this helps, RonM.

To add, the lid outside diameters are about 16 7/8 in. and 15 1/2 in. RonM

I looked at the original air cleaner on my car ('68 L30/M20) and the air cleaner has an indentation for the coil. It wouldn't clear otherwise. Same with the two in the basement, with the larger air cleaner having a much larger indentation. Do the repro. air cleaners have it, if not that's your problem. RonM

Could also be the coil bracket.  It should have the coil at an angle/tilted back to the firewall.  They're not all the same angle either.  Just shy of 17 inch sounds correct for the OD of a 67 housing, as Ron said.  I believe the repops do have the indentation.  Between the housing and coil brackets, over the years many get changed to something other than what came from the factory.  Correct carb base gasket, correct housing, aftermarket intake, aftermarket coil, etc could also be factors.  Here's and old thread from the TC site that has some pics of the coil angle:
