I've spent time trying to figure out the best way to set these battery cable clips (68AIM page 151) #3857706. What is the best way to expand (set) the rivet type end that goes in the sub-frame? The other brake and fuel line clips that had a push rivet (Part #3881339) were easy since the internal portion was tapered and a tapered punch expanded the rivet. What has anyone found to work well with this type of clip?
I bet JohnZ would know what was used back in the day and maybe that would help with how to do it in the 21st century. :)

One I just set in position (correct I believe) but not expanded/set!

Thanks Paul but John's answer there stated using an auger or tapered punch which I do not see how that would work. On the sub-frame and chassis the clips used for brake and fuel lines part #3881339 has an internal tapered rivet type which an auger or tapered punch works great.

Chick we set mine in the sub frame with the punch similar to yours in the picture. Mine had a taper that was longer but it worked.

I am guessing the repro clip is not exactly like the original.  Big surprise there.

Just went out and looked at my subframe, and there is a threaded hole there.  I did not thread it.

Anyone have a late 69 Z with a bolted on clip there?

Chick, curious, how did you get it set?

I don't have a solution for you Lynn, but I did go down and photograph the original clip on my subframe.   
When I was cleaning the subframe for recoating, I decided not to remove this clip for fear of destroying it.  I know it has never been replaced on my 09C (Sept '69) Z28.   It is either 'push in', or the plug portion is threaded, since there's no screw retaining it.

I came up with a solution.  Just finished and it worked, but does take some time.  Doubt I would try it with the engine in.

Should have taken pics as I was going along, but just thought about it.  Used a concrete anchor type screw ground down to fit.  Pulled against the rivet to spread it out, then cut the other end off with bolt cutters, and fished out the sacrificial part with a magnet.

Lynn, sorry never saw your request on how I made out. I tried splitting the rivet on one as a trial and then using an auger to punch at an angle to bend the split sleeve halfs outward to hold but one of the halfs broke off. So I have been looking for something to use to replace that brass type rivet.
The 2nd one goes to the outside of the large hole. On all the camaros I have looked at the two pcs. go just shown in this picture. By the way, this is an LOS car and its the same as all the NOR cars I have looked at. Notice also the orientation as many restored cars have that feature wrong by having the open end facing upward.

Lynn,  I went down and looked at my car, and I note there is a 1/4" hole to the outside and one to the inside of the large access hole in the crossmember.   my clip wasn't present at this time.  I'll have to check my old photos to see if I captured it before taking apart to clean.  In the '69 AIM, it seems the best pictorial is on pg 163 UPC 12 pgA11, showing the same part (8) clip in both locations, but it's not obvious from the pictorial which one of the 1/4" holes is used.   From where they are located, and where the battery cable runs (along the pan), my first thought would be the innermost hole, but I can't say for sure.  Maybe someone else can pipe in on this.

Here is ours with the original clips in place. The 69's I have looked at are the same as our 68.
Shift the picture over to clearly see the 2nd clip. Pic is too large, sorry!

Not sure Gary but it would seem it was there for a possible clip. The AIM depicts the clips being put in open side up (not correct) and it appears like the inside hole was used but it was not. Bet JohnZ would know!

Got my clips installed.

Couple of notes.
I cleaned off all the rubberized stuff that was on the clips (way too thin) and dipped the top half in plasti dip (two coats) black.  Looks much more correct.

The little setting tool I made worked great.

If you happen to fubar one of the rivets, none of the hardware stores carry hollow rivets any longer (at least not around here).   But... the good news is you can buy a bag of about 100 for $1.34 at Hobby Lobby.
