1969 SS350 muncie 4 speed tunnel hole template
« on: August 10, 2011, 10:24:02 PM »
I installed a new floor and want to cut the correct hole in the trans tunnel for a muncie 4 speed.  The car is a console small block car.  I would like a template I can follow to cut the hole, rather than trace the shifter boot ect.  What are the factory measurements? There is a template on the fourm but the tranny tunnel tapers and in this template there is no account for this.  Thanks Joe

Try these. Both are 4 speed versions.
One is BW and the other is color.
Both show the torch cutout and the screw positions for the boot and the console bolts.

Here it is with the tunnel center line . Lay it out and put your console over it to check it before you cut it .

Here are a few photos that may also help. Not sure how accurate you want to be but gives an idea of how the torch cut tunnel looked. Also note the placement of the ground near the back of the opening. These are from my old Van Nuys Z that was 100% original.

These are from my other 69Z . Car had been raced and the tunnel hacked but the dimensions from the center of the groove back should be spot on

Just to be clear, the ground strap is for the guages, is that correct?   So.... on a non console, non guage car, there would be no ground strap?   I am asking, not telling?
The last pic posted by rat427 does not appear to have a hole for the ground strap, but does have the threaded nut for the console, so I am guessing it is a console car, but without guages.  Again, asking.

I know this is old.... but I need to know only one measurement.  How far off center to the left is the shifter hole?

I have the dimensions, just nothing to locate it from righ to left.   It is probably encoded in one of the above diagrams.

One of the photos below was pretty good, and you could probably measure offset from that.  If you can't, My drive train is out and the jack is jacked up, so I could take a similar photo from the bottom if you want...  Not any good way to measure I can see..

PS.  Don't cut your hole with a plasma cutter..  it will be TOO NEAT to be original...  :)

I blew that pic up to actual size and printed it.  But because it is taken from a slight angle, it doesn't help me.

My car had no console, so I can't use those holes as a reference.  A previous owner had cut most of the tunnel out for a straight line shifter, so I have no dimples.   At first I thought the .905 measurement (just over 7/8) was an off set, but when I scribe using that much offset, it it obviously too much.  I am guessing it is only about a half inch, but I only get one chance at this.  I am not doing any more welding on the floor at this point.

I do still have the "V" shaped crease up ahead, so am able to locate the North South orientation.  Just can't do the side to side.

Lynn,
If you can suggest a point (or points) to measure from, I'd be glad to do the measurements from my car; most things are out of the way right now.. (meaning I've got parts scattered all over my garage.. :) but the bottom of the floor is clean and easily accessible and the console is out..

That would be great.

On my car, if I measuere across the two east west screw holes, it is about 7.25 inches from the "center of the turn" to the "center of the turn", meaning where the tunnel turns down on each side.

It really wouldn't matter what your reference was, as long as it is the same on both sides to find the center on the tunnel.

Once you have that reference, then measure to the center of the hole (measured from the two east west screws).

What is the difference in the two points?  I am guessing about 9/16.

I notice you got your car in 1976.  That is the same year I got mine.  I am betting yours was a lot nicer.

Thanks for any help.  I know it is hard to follow instructions like this.  If need be, I can snap a couple of pics that show what I am talking about and email them to you.

Here is what I need.  It can be a car with a four speed, or even from a column shifted car.  It won't matter because there will be a dimple where the "north" screw goes.  All that matters is that your tunnel is unmolested.

I layed a regular 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper on the tunnel flush with the back edge of the V shaped groove in front of the shift hole.  Pretty easy to figure out what center is.  I folded the paper in half, drew a line down the crease then centered the paper on the tunnel.  Each side goes just a short way over the edge of the tunnel at the top.

Then, I put a dot where I THINK the top screw hole should be.  If someone could do this on his or her car, but find the true spot for the top (what I call the north) screw.   How far west is that screw hole from dead center on the tunnel?

You don't even need to take a pic.  Just measure to the screw hole, of if your car doesn't have the floor shifter, to the dimple.

That is the only measurement I need.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Lynn,

I had much difficulty posting pictures of my cutout and template here in CRG.. maybe I don't understand what the image limit it..  I thought it was up to 4 images, each no greater than 150KB?   Anyway, I finally sent you photos of my floor, from below and above, and a photo of a template I made per your specs.. :) ..  in email..

Gary:

Thank you so much.  This is what makes this hobby great, and sites like this so valuable to all of us.

Very cool.  I am glad you told me about the email.  It went to my junk folder.  I get about 50 per day there, so seldom check it.

Would never have known.

Just so everyone knows the magic number..... it is 9/16, exactly what my guess was in post #10 above.

The center of the shifter hole is 9/16 of an inch to the left of the center of the tunnel.

BTW, very cool looking car (at least what I can see).

No problem Lynn..  I've gotten so much help and information from the members of this site, the least I can do is try to help someone else when I can.   I hope it all works out for you!   Gary
