beware of the look alike 68-Z28 fan
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:51:53 PM »
This fan is up for sale on ebay... ad claims it is a rare fan but BEWARE this is not the real McCoy Z28 Fan which is not disclosed in the ad but the big dollar price tag sure is... leading you to think it is real but it is not.. so just be aware of this since the ad is not clear about what it is...

This is an interesting part of the description: "This fan has been professionally machined, ready to paint and bolt on."
I wonder what machined means in this context? Fixed or modified an old common fan to fit this application, repro or something else?

Zoom on the front side of the fan, you can plainly see where the original 3.00" circle bolt holes have been welded up, and the pattern indexed and redrilled at 3.250", which is the correct bolt hole circle for the L78/Z28 fan blades. All other markings and the rivet count appear the same between the applications. I've seen "H" and "W" markings appear on both low po and hi po blades, 4 rivets/blade. Gotta hand it to them for innovation -

I've worked in production atmosphere and a lot of the times only one pattern/blank for a piece will be made and machined to different specs. In this case all the fans "could have" been made this way. It's more productive than set up time for individual runs. I'm saying all the centers were stamped from one machine and then they would run batches of correctly machined specs for a particular fan. This again could be the correct fan in all aspects except the original configuration of the bolt holes.

Why not ask if the fan has been modified? It sure sounds like it has.

I agree completely. I have a lo-po 3.00 fan here, and it's identical to the 3.25 fan (also Jerry references the similarities between the two), with the exception of the bolt circle. Same rivits, center, markings and the clutch even looks the same, except for the bolt circle. I also agree with Kurt, "it sure sounds like it has" -

The evidence that it is a welded and re-drilled fan is that the bolt holes are not in the correct radial position.
What appears to be the remanents original 3" holes on the painted side are in the correct radial position.

So, it is a rare fan in that it is a 4 rivet, though the ad could mislead if not carefully read.
The seller does not claim it to be an original 3.25" 4 rivet fan.
The seller does not claim it to be an extremely rare fan, only extremely rare fan blades [4 rivet]
The seller does mention that it has been machined, though does not specifically mention that this is because it has been welded and re-drilled.

So, probably still worth a good dollar being a 4 rivet, but would have been better to not have welded and redrilled it and to simply mention this as a possible mod in the ad.
There's probably a number of 3" 4 rivet hunters who are currently howling at what has been done here!

I'll post if I get a response from my asking.

The bolt holes have been moved. Center hole has been enlarged.  How all this took place he didn't explain.

I would say yes. The dented blade is a give away.

You'd think for that money it would at least have a decent paint job
