Rear Wheel Well Plugs - Before or After Undercoating?
« on: December 19, 2012, 06:02:26 PM »
Were the plastic plugs in the rear wheel wells (3 each side) installed before or after the undercoating was applied to these areas?

My originals had some undercoating on them, but I think it was from a quick re-coat that I did back in the 80's.

Not sure on the '68s, but my '67 showed no evidence of undercoating at the plugs. That's not to say it didn't come off in the last 40+ years, but I see no indications of having been sprayed. JMO

I just checked my 67 4B LOS and all plugs are clean of any coating.
In both wheel wells  there is a large thick clump of undercoating and the plugs look like they were installed with the coating still wet because they sit within the clump but are not covered by it.

Chick - Are they rubber or plastic?

My 69 08A car had some sound deadener on the plugs.  I believe all were rubber.  Didn't take pics, but have the old parts somewhere.

So 67 was the only year for plastic in the wheel wells?

^^ No.  My 68 had 1 plastic plug.  Seems that the other 5 got 'lost' somewhere along the line.  People with 69s have reported plastic plugs as well.

I have been told by the Camaro Nationals Judges that the wheel well plugs need to have undercoating on them to be correct. Scoop

Well then my 67 4B LOS survivor will have failed that inspection because there are zero coatings on any of the plugs. If I were to restore that car I would leave them clean despite what the judges think because they have been that way since I bought the car in 1980 and the car sat for 6 years in a garage before I came alone to buy it.

You are right. There seems to be many things the judges say are correct buy contradict many documented original cars. Not saying I agree with the judges but just wanted to let you know what they look for.  Thanks, Scoop

If I should restore the survivor I will make darn sure I get close up pictures of every detail from all around for reference.
I'll have to get a camera with a good macro zoom for that  :)

Thanks for the scoop....'Scoop'  ;D

If the car had been well cared for (which lots of early Z28's were ; they are like Corvettes, they were/are either driven very hard, or babied!).. :); anyway, if they were well cared for by a 'car nut', it is possible that the owner removed the plug to ensure there was no trash trapped (which would cause rust with moisture), and to have cleaned the plugs prior to re-installing...  and Yes, I've done things like that before.. :)

It's also possible that the undercoating wasn't done consistently by every person who ever did the job....  (although the undercoating on all my fenderwells seems to be very consistent and per a precise pattern....
