Rear main seal
« on: December 09, 2012, 09:59:39 PM »
On an older thread JohnZ recommended a fel pro 2912 rear main seal.  I noticed there is a 2909 that says its the same seal and is $16 less.  Is there a difference in these two?

Yes, there is. The #2900 is a standard silicone seal, and the #2912 is the same seal made from a premium fluoroelastomer material. There's also a #BS-118291 offset double-lip seal for crank journals showing groove wear.

On the Summit site they show all those which I understand the difference in.  They also show a 2909 seal which is the fluoroelastomer like the 2912 but it is $16 cheaper.  The side by side comparison shows the 2912 fits v8,v6 and l6.  The 2909 is for small block v8.  Do you know if you can use the 2909?

How about anyone else?  Do you know if the 2909 Fluoroelastomer seal is the same as the 2912 or can be used in place of it on a 302?

Never mind, the description says "small block" and then application say 400 small block.  Are these expensive seals really worth getting or should I just go with the blue 2900 which was in it when I took it apart?

As johnZ stated, if no grove 2912 is a good choice. I installed this one after trying 2 other felpro seals before. It's the material because seal is made identical. I would have gladly paid $16 more first time around.

Unfortunately I had to make my order and already ordered the 2900 as that was what was in it to begin with and hadn't leaked in 5 years.
