Hey Eddie, on the dip stick you should see USE GM 6041-M-QUALITY MS ENGINE OIL and the length is 18 3/4" from bottom of handle to the tip.

3951576 is the service replacement part number, but it's not correct for a 69 Z28. Read THIS for more info.

Ed,  After reading this post and the one you referenced I'm a little confused. It states that the flatten gauge handle dip stick is correct for the 69Z and that it didn't have a part number on it. I have a  flatten gauge handle dip stick in my 69 Z and it does have the part number on it. Is this the wrong dip stick for my car?

Sorry Rick, but I've not researched this at all, so I'll have to defer to John or Jerry.

Here's a couple of pics that might help. The instructions on the NOS 3974251 oil pan that I have calls for the service 3951576 stick, but my original "flattened" '69 stick is different, marked like all the previous threads, and looks different from both the 3876869 stick and 3896912 sticks shown on the attachment. Note the date on the instruction page - 2/69, and the reference to the 3951576.

BTW, all three of these sticks are identical in length, regardless of handle. The only thing I have not checked is the position of the markings relative to the end of the stick -

If you need any detailed pics, let me know. I just posted pics of the pan itself on a separate posting concerning '68 pan number and appearance -

Steve, You stated that all the sticks were the same length, what is that length? The middle stick in your picture (The Flattened gauge Handle) Does it have a part number on it? Thanks I appreciate your input.

Rick,

I measured from the bottom of the handle ferrule to the end of the stick - they are all within a few .001's of 18-3/8". Brings up a good point - when you match the bottom ends up, the "Fill" marks are not in line (see pics). I saw in an earlier post that the stick one was using seemed to overfill the pan - this is probably the cause if he was using the wrong stick.

Flatted handle has the 2 picture spread here - "Use MS Oils - GM6041-M". Was on the car when I bought it in '73 -

According to the July 1969 Parts Catalog.

The 3951576 stick is listed for the 3974251 pan.  This is for a 1969 302ci..

The 3896912 stick is listed for the 3927134 pan for the 1967 and the 3923239 stick is listed for the 3927134 pan for the 1968.

Funny - packing slip said to use the 3951576 stick, but the stick in the box was the 3876869 grey tipped stick, complete with original tag. ???

BTW - pic of original '69 outer tube , plus part number for the NOS part (I believe this was common to most small blocks).

The 3876869 shows to be for a 1965-67 Chevelle 283-327 (except high performance 327).

Got that, plus I see the other numbers in my '74 parts manual.

Lists the 3974251 as '67-69 Camaro 302, plus 70-72 Sp. H/Per. (350) by that time, so I'd guess there was already an update at that point. '74 didn't list the 3927134 pan by that date -
