eBay '67 Holley Z28/L78 carb
« on: October 29, 2012, 09:41:07 PM »
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-Camaro-Z28-L78-302-396-Holley-carburetor-3910-751-May-67-/330651887642?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4cfc63681a&vxp=mtr

Have you guys seen this sort of thing before?  It looks too new to be real?  I asked the seller about is origins and he replied "carb is built to 1967 L78 and Z28 specs it is a new issue that only I have..."

He has good feedback (100%) and lots of other current auctions with legitimate used parts.

Wondering if it might work on the '67 Z28 clone/tribute I'm building (http://www.rhoadescamaro.com/build)

It may be new.

We did a '67 Z/28 25 years ago and bought a Holley re-issue 3910 for it. Every OE 3910 I had located was overpriced and well-worn. Holley offered a number of re-issue '60s carbs for some time. I do not recall how it was dated but it was technically correct.

These are not original carbs and would be perfect for a clone/tribute. I have never been in favor of using original parts to build non original cars.
1. It uses up rare parts that should be used to restore original cars, and
2. Eventually someone will be convinced they have the real deal because their car has original parts; and potentially take advantage of someone else.

Other than the fact it wasn't made when it says it was made, what are any other likely differences?  Anything that would make it perform any differently than an original well-maintained carb?

Holley has made numerous fresh runs of the classic muscle car carbs over the years, including many with no date stamp on the choke air horn, to be "dated" by the reseller. Most are technically correct to the original internal specs, although some of the later ones have been altered for emissions; for instance, the most recent re-run of the LIST 2818 and 2818-1 (4150) carbs (originally used on the '64-'65 Corvette 327/365 and 327/350 engines) changed the primary metering block internals such that the distributor vacuum port on the passenger side supplies "ported" vacuum, where the originals supplied full manifold vacuum from that port.

The most obvious clue on the re-issue carbs is the hex-head float bowl screws, where the originals used slotted and beveled float bowl screws.

I completely rebuilt an original #3246 for my Z28 "Tribute" '67.  With the Air Cleaner on you can't tell the difference.  Kicker for me was the #3246 is correct for the build date of the car, (11A), #3910's weren't even being built yet at that time.
