intake manifold casting numbers
« on: July 26, 2006, 11:13:34 PM »
??? Can anyone recommend a web site that has a listing of the casting numbers for the intake manifolds used on the sb? Or how about book or anything else?

Chevrolet by the Numbers:  1965-1969 is a good reference.  There are also several "pocket" sized books with ref Chevy/GM part numbers.  One I have is for 69 Camaro, one is for Small Block Chevrolet, one is for 66 Chevelle, etc.  I'll check tonight as to exact title, etc

While it is by no means definitive nor entirely without errors, the NHRA tech bulletins published for Stock Eliminator do include most manifold casting numbers and the years that they were used.  You can access it through NHRA.com or at <http://www.nhra.com/tech_specs/engine/index.html>.  If you have problems getting to this information respond to me on this thread and I'll try to walk you through it.  As with everything else associated with NHRA, it's not particularly simple.

OK Rich and "C"

I got 4 numbers off an intake manifold from a friend. These are the last 4 numbers he can see he can not make out the first 3. The last four are "8672" He thinks the first 3 are either 384, 386 or 388.

These numbers are directly in front of the carb and behind his oil fill tube if that helps.
Any ideas????????????????? I downloaded the nhra for the years 67, 68, 70, 78 and even 88 just to get some numbers and see where these might fit in but I could not find anything.

Work your magic CRG members!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's the carburetor application?  Q-Jet, Holley, Rochester 4-Jet?

Is there a casting date code behind the carburetor pad?

Just a few thoughts:  1. the oil filler tube at the front of the manifold went the way of the dinosaur after about 1968.  The "803" manifold that is preferred by the NHRA stocker guys is one of the last that incorporates the filler tube.  2.  The NHRA lists do not include manifold numbers prior to 1964 for Chevrolet so those numbers prior to that time could be anything.  3. MOST of the mid-to-late 60s cast iron manifolds had the casting number BEHIND the carburetor along with the casting date code (I.E. "D  14  7").  The most common use of the pad in front of the carburetor was for the firing order so if the number your friend is giving you could possibly end in "572" instead of "672" you're not likely to find a casting number to match the firing order.

Forgot to ask above:  is the manifold aluminum or iron?

Thanks "C":

I will pass this info onto my friend. If this helps, the heads are 3890462, Camel Hump with a casting date of B046, Feb. 4, 66. He does not know if these items are original to the block since these two items are pretty interchangable on the small blocks. But based on your statement regarding the oil fill tube, it would seem the block has to be a 68  or before if I understand correctly.

I will have him check and see if he can read or find any numbers on the back side of the manifold. To answer your other questions,
The manifold is cast iron, and it is a Q-Jet carb.
Thanks for all the info and help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK here is an update on what my friend found behind the carb on his intake manifold. It appears to read 3919803, 3918803 or 3918603. There is also a "GM1" casting directly in front of these numbers. He did not find a casting  date anywhere near these two numbers. He thinks it is 3919803.

Any thoughts out there?????????????????????

Dab,

I believe you have your answer.  The 803 manifold is standard fare for a 1967-68 327 (275 horsepower) or a 350 (295 horsepower) engine.  You will see on the NHRA sheets that it is accepted for either year.  It is not accepted for a '69 engine.  The 462 heads are also typical of either of these engines.  I've run all these combinations in Stock Eliminator and I've been subjected to teardowns with these casting numbers.  What is not clear yet is that this is the same block.  A different block could have been swapped in under the 1968 manifold and carburetor.  Also, I'd be willing to bet a nickle that there is a casting date near the casting number on the manifold.  Tell him to look for the tell-tale casting marks of the screwheads that held the date designator in the mold.  It has been on every 803 manifold I've ever seen.

You're a good detective!

Thanks "C"

He has been trying to get the numbers for the block off the back drivers side but it is tough to do without removing the hood. Here are some other numbers I told him to check.
exhaust manifolds Left side 3892679  Right Side 3840912 application '67-68 302/327/350
Axle BP0403G2  is this a '67 2:73 or 3:08 April 3rd Detroit Gear 2nd shift

From Chevrolet By the Numbers 1965-69, Chapter 9, page 189:

Manifold #3919803
Carb Type:  4BBL Rochester
Year: 1968
Mode/Engine/Horsepowerl:
          Passenger       327cid  250/275 Hp
          Chevelle         327cid  250/275/325 Hp
          Chevy II         327cid  250/275 Hp
                              350cid  295 Hp
          Camaro         327cid  275 Hp
                              350cid  295 Hp
          Corvette        327cid  300/350 Hp

This intake is identical to #3844459 except for some minor interior and exterior casting changes.  Casting #3960364 may appear on this part.  The intake has an oil splash shield and two rear short carburetor studs.  The temperature sending unit hole has been plugged.

Also look at the recent postings at the following link:  http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=969.0
which also discussed the 803 manifold.

The other "pocket" size part number reference books that I referred in a previous post above are:

1. General Motors Muscle Cars; Part Number Descriptions for the Chevrolet Division 1967-1975 Camaro; copyright 1992 by Mark S. Allen

2. General Motors Muscle Cars; Part Number Descriptions for the Chevrolet Division 1964-1972 Chevelle; copyright 1994 by Mark S. Allen

3. General Motors Muscle Cars; Part Number Descriptions for the Chevrolet Division 1955-1990 Small Block Engines; copyright 1991 by Mark S. Allen

Rich:

Thanks for the info and the link! I am going to find one or more of these books. And I'm going to start pulling my engine numbers off and see what I have in my car. I know the engine is not original to my car, but pretty sure the tranny and rear end  But then again, ya never know. The exhaust headers was simple, I have them off the car, replaced with Flowtech headers, they are the same numbers as my friends 3892679 and 3840912. If I knew how, I would try and post a picture of the engine before I replaced the heads and valve covers that were on the car when I purchased it.

Again, thanks for the great Info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Chevrolet By the Numbers series is readily available through Amazon or bookstores like Borders or Barnes & Noble.  The pocket references I also picked up at Barnes & Noble - but probably about 10 years ago.  Don't know if they are still readily available or not.  If I was going to buy just one, I'd definitely go with Chevrolet By the Numbers 1965-1969.  Very good reference with drawings, date code info, and pictures to go along with the part number and casting number info.
