Correct tacho [tick toc tac] redline for 68 396 L34
« on: July 22, 2006, 11:15:47 AM »
After looking through the tacho's on offer from Classic, I noticed that the one listed for 68 396 325 - 350HP is redlined at 5000 rpm.
Mine is redlined at 5500 rpm and was puzzled by the discrepancy, as I was fairly sure mine was the original from factory.
I have just spotted this seemingly fairly original 68 bb camaro on ebay in which the seller notes that the tacho is redlined at 5500.

Is 5500 rpm correct for 68 L34? Where there any variations to this?

Some other points of interest are the straight wrap-around bumble bee stripes only on the nose - no stripes down the sides, which is how mine is.
I'm sure though that all 68 bb's came with the striped sides? Is that correct? The seller does say that the car has been resprayed but kept as original as possible.

The other point is the wheel caps, could you get L34 with those type of caps?

Read the information on the 1968 PAGE here on the CRG site. It shows the L34 redline at 5.5k, but make sure you read note 6.

The bumblebee stripe was used up to January, 1968. At that time they went to the second version where the strips continued to the doors. The car in the auction is from early April, 1968 so yes, it would have the second version stripes.

Those caps are "standard equipment" for all models. If you didn't want Rally wheels, Simulated Wire Covers, etc... this is what you got.

Thanks Ed, my date code is 12C so the bumblebee only would be correct for mine. Kinda glad about that, I have a preference for that look.

I had a browse over the other options and the multileaf rear springs caught my eye. Mine is the 4 leaf version with 12 bolt and THM400
