Update on my restoration project.

The butternut yellow paint should hopefully be coming soon.....

Unfortunately I am over budget. I guess I kind of expected it though (the POR 15 application added alot to the cost).  With the price of gas going up shipping charges are only going to go up as well so I guess I will have to combine all my orders to keep the costs down.  But once it is done it should be done. 

Putting all the pieces back on will be the fun part (probably aggrevating as well).

Well, I'm partial to butternut yellow.  So, did you POR 15 the whole body?  That sounds like a great idea, and I'd love to know more before we start on my re-paint.

I am new in teh Camaroworld but my fauvrit Mustang color is Springtime Yellow, so I can certainly ralate to your yellow too :-))))

So, did you POR 15 the whole body?

No.  We did the whole inside, trunk, door jambs.  Anything that has exterior paint we just used epoxy prime, and also epoxy primed over what we Por'd.  I did OSPHO the entire car first before any applications.  Inside the wheel wells, whole underside and entire trunk along with the seating area, also the firewall and chasis were POR'd.  The reason why I didn't do the exterior is that they recommend that you sand with 600 grit sandpaper to "rough" it up a little or use their tie coat primer for adhesion.  I would be sanding for weeks on end. 

When the car is finished I will put the Eastwood box on it to put the negative charge on car to prevent further rust.  This is a car that I plan on keeping for many years.  The more I get involved with this one the more I look at my 69 and want to do the same to it.

Anyhow I hope that this helps.  That POR dries real real hard and boy does it smell  when you spray it!

Thanks for the info.  That's a fairly extensive use of POR 15 (even without eternal sanding).  I've used it on chasis, door jams and around the cowl and back window on other cars.  It has worked well.

What % of your paint cost/time do you think using POR 15 added to your project?

Well from what I can remember the gallon of POR was around $130.00 or so for the gallon (400 Sq Ft) and the time spent spraying it was not too bad.  We tried not to spray the exterior portion of the car where the butternut yellow is going.  Just the inside fenders, rear quarters, entire trunk, firewall, underneath the car, seating area, behind the dash, really anywhere you can't see.  Time spent to prep the car by masking and papering, etc.  I would guess it was around a weeks time for the whole process.  Maybe a little less.  The stuff is hard to clean off and smells real bad.  It works but I think it was worth it.  We will find out in about ten years.... total hours maybe around 20 estimated for the entire POR process.  start to finish.

Yes, it does.  Everybody in the auto painting business that I know and appreciate their opinion constantly stresses, "Eventually these cars will rust again... no matter how well you take care of them."  Obviously good prep and priming is vital, but the lasting time of a good paint job is finite, especially on a driver.  You are right, it will be several more years before we know by experience how well applications like POR 15 will help.  In the end, I'm going to have the equivalent of about $12k in materials and labor in my exterior restoration (actual cost is going to be about half that and I know I'm getting out light).  I want that to last and even though I'm going to hold on to the car, you still have to try and not put too much more into it than you can get out of it.  I've got a friend who does "high end" restorations and he has a 67 Camaro in his shop that has a $28k paint job.  It's beautiful...  He is till working on a 57 where the owner has already spent $60k on it this year.  Obviously, those guys don't worry about budgets.
