The crower rods I bought are around 800 bucks new... and they are rated good for 8200 rpm, would be real nice to use them. We'll see what happens...

Soooooooooooo I picked up the crower rods today, brand new, really nice pieces. Only problem is they are for a small journal crank. Big bummer... I'm having trouble finding information on the subject, but does anybody know the maximum amount that can be machined out of the big end of the rod? Can they be bored out to fit a large journal crank? From looking at the rods it looks like there is plenty of material...

I got a good deal on a set of crower sportsman full floaters. I pick them up tomorrow. They should be more than enough rod.

So I actually decided to just get new rods. After all is said and done it will be 3 and change to get arp bolts and have the stock rods resized. So I will be getting rid of a set of stock dz302 rods with 950 miles on them. Are these valuable at all to a restoration?

Thanks, this bottom end is clean and has low miles, I will use new rod bolts.

Don't you have to have the rods resized after new bolts? That's probably not cheap is it? If it's as simple as just putting new bolts in than yes it is cheaper insurance...

Hey guys, anyone know the limits of the stock rod bolts? I have heard on other places on the Web that they are a weak points. Anybody have any issues with them, I would like to know from guys that actually wind out their 302! Feedback is greatly appreciated!

I would use MLS gaskets if they were thin enough but that would lower compression too much. I will be using .015 steel shim gaskets. I thought about milling the heads to use thicker gaskets but I don't want to ruin the quench...

Have any of you guys milled the heads to use a modern say .041 head gasket but still maintain the factory compression ratio?

Doesn't the dz come stock with .010 head gaskets?

Thanks for all of the input. I have been researching avgas and I'm gonna try running a premium fuel/avgas mix. The local airport has it self serve for around 4 bucks a gallon and all of the local dirt track guys buy their fuel there instead of the expensive vp fuel.

Mild Modifications / 69 dz302 dual valve springs

Hey guys, can stock 186 castings accept dual valve springs? My heads were machined for dual valve springs in the early 70s. I have an opportunity to buy a freshly done set of 186 castings that are stock but my camera recommends a dual spring. Are there modern dual valve springs that fit into the 186 heads with no machine work? I can buy the heads for $400 which is probably cheaper than I can have my original heads rebuilt for...

The z motor I'm running is in a 55 Bell Air, it was put together in the late 60s and sat ever since 74. I don't really want to run a different motor because to me this car is a time capsule. It is untouched from the way it was built in the late 60s. I have thought about selling it and building a more street able motor bit that just wouldn't be the same...

I have 93 octane in a few local pumps here, sounds like a lot of you guys can only get 91 for premium pump gas. Maybe I will try to run the 93 straight and see what happens. As a last resort I can always run 3 gallons of 110ll aviation fuel to a tank.
