The story on a recent Z/28 acquisition.

Back in the summer (2019) I was looking for another 69 Camaro and had posted a want ad on sYc when I was contacted by my friend Jeff Boone. Jeff had just picked up a low mileage 3 owner (49,000 mile) Z/28 that he was preparing to sell and we got to talking about it in early September. It didn't take long to see just how nice this late 10E car was and Jeff and I managed to put together a deal on the car. The car didn't have a lot for documents other than its known owner history, a few titles and an odometer statement from the second owner dating back to 1990 when he sold the car in PA. Jeff pulled an NCRS report but as it turns out, this was one of the late cars that didn't have any history on the dealer it was assigned to? I have since double checked this with NCRS who again confirmed "No Information on Document Search VIN 124379N708145". With Jeff having back traced the owners and visiting with a couple of them, here's what was learned about the car.

The car itself was reported as being bought new in North Carolina by original owner Woodrow Wilson Judge. It was traded in about a year later (1970) to Freddie's Performance Cars in Carlisle PA. Having 9000 miles on the odometer, the car was bought by its second owner William A. Miller who traded in his 65 Impala SS to acquire the Z/28 from Freddie's. He drove the car and put about 35,000 miles on it over the course of 20 years, and shared a story with Jeff Boone about driving the car from Pennsylvania to Daytona for the races back in 71/72. He owned the car up until 1990 and sold it for $12,000 at the time with 44,746 showing on the clock. It was said that he only sold it because he wanted cash to buy a new tractor for his small farm. These facts were discussed with Jeff Boone when he went to visit the second owner in October of 2019. A signed mileage affidavit was supplied when the car was sold and re-titled to its third owner. The third owner was Wayne Harmon of Pennsylvania who worked for Fedex and spotted the car outside of Hershey while making his rural rounds. Upon buying the car, he owned it until his untimely passing in a motorcycle accident in 2014. The car then transferred ownership and was willed to his brother Dennis Harmon of PA who owned the car up until it being sold to Jeff in August 2019.

Graeme, great to see you over here as well! Love your new ride! There is a lot to learn from that one.
Buddy

Thanks Buddy. I always drop in here to fact check things and see what's going on every once in a while, but I'm mostly on sYc. Both are great sites.

JoeC...

Here are a few pics I grabbed when the car arrived a couple weeks ago. Not the best pics but clearly, there are no rubber insulators on the shift levers on this 10E car.

Here's an original 3138 Hurst that's currently within a late 69 Camaro Z/28 that I recently acquired and thought I would share because it's a late build. Car is a 10E build from early November 69 and it appears the shifter and trans have never been out of the car with original hardware and all linkages including lockout in place. Hope this date codes helps.

Original transmission, shifter and bell housing in place.

Have you had any success negotiating with the person who bought the drive line from Matt? I was the under-bidder on that auction and wondered if the car was still out there. Dates line up perfectly with my car and as near as we could figure the cars went off the line within a day of each other.

I hope you are able to re-connect the drive line and the car.

What’s the story on the wrong axle? I can understand the block and transmission being gone with the race history.

The original owners track helper said that the car had 3 various diff's in it throughout it's life of racing. The original which most likely blown up, a 9" which was used for a while, and another BW diff installed from a different car. Maybe they didn't know it was 6 months late for the build and being it's been there since the 70's, likely didn't care? That's all I know at this point.

Last night I received full documentation on the car sent to me by the seller, and I'm going to try and get a hold of Rolands track helper and/or his brother if he's still alive. A friend of mine remembers the car as he raced at the same tracks during the same time period with his Camaro. Car's cool and hard to argue with the condition of the body, but it really comes down the price since the numbers are long gone.

Seller and I talked at length but we're still a ways apart on what we each perceive as the cars net value. None of the drive train matches including the diff, and he was supposed to send me additional pics of the underside including the floors, frame rails and a few things on Wednesday but didn't follow through. I was thinking of flying up to see it but it doesn't look like it will happen at this point? I'm not going to chase it and I'm sure he has enough people interested to get it sold.

Would have been fun to own.  8)

That would make perfect sense after you mention it. Kurt, have you seen any others like it from the same period? Not doubting the tag or it's originality on this car, just wondered if I missed something in the coding or if it was a known error in the stamping. First one I have seen like it.

Thanks

Decoding/Numbers / 1968 Trim Tag Build Date 1SD
« on: March 14, 2018, 04:27:09 AM »
Can anyone tell me what this build date means on this 68 LOS trim tag noted as being 1SD.

Does the S represent Special Order or something to that effect? I know the car was factory ordered as a L78 and was built in December and sold to customer on Jan 12 from the docs. Was there a mid December change from LOS to VN plant code and does the body number correspond to other trim tags from same period? Thanks for any help.

Any chance you kept a copy of this Kijiji ad with the sellers phone number. I know who has the car this engine belongs to and he is looking to get a hold of whoever had the block for sale.

Restoration / Re: 1969 Z28 spare wheel

On another note.....I am curious if the green '69 pictured is stored long term like that on jacks. Isn't that bad for the rear spring front bushings and front upper and lower control arm bushings that otherwise had their bolts tightened with the weight of the car?

Mike

Car is never stored on jacks. It was only up because I was switching wheels around and test fitting different wheel combo's. Car now has it's Day II wheels on it and is back on the ground. When I store things long term, I always put the tires onto contoured car dollies or foam pads to keep from flat spotting the tires.

In 2004, I took these pictures of a low mile CTB coded LT1 engine removed in the early 70's from a wrecked car. Although a 70 motor, you can clearly see where the plant has written the engine suffix on the sides of the block, and where they have placed two lines (forming an X) on both cylinder heads. The front had the X on the drivers sides as well but hard to see as the paint held up better on the front than it did the back. These were shared with Greg Roberts on the Nova site after they were taken.

Like I said...these are from a 1970 build but it does tie together with earlier practices from the preceding years.

As noted the wheel does have the BB, and yes Steve, it did appear to have tire bead marks from a tire being mounted at one point? I say did...as I have now restored the wheel to "normative practice" along with 4 other wheels. I get what your saying Kurt, but as William stated, if parts were needed from stores, they could have been taken due to a shortage and ended up on, or in a car. Having adopted the CRG normative practice and sometimes over restoring, this wheel will no longer be a possible straggler as it is now black and silver.

One point to note, all of my other 4 wheels before being restored were spun and trued up. When it came to balancing the new bias ply tires, all required significant weight...except for the one that was the claimed original spare. It spun perfect on the road force balancer and was noticeably better than the other 4 which had all been recently trued? Go figure. :)

Here's how they turned out once restored. (i did leave the factory paint gobs between the outer hoop and center so I could tell which one was the suspected spare)

Wheels were then fit with a non factory tire of my choice and placed on the car to get it as a roller for moving around. Today they will be replaced with a set of Day II Cragar's and will go into storage along with a full set of NOS derby caps and 4 clip trim rings. I'm sure they'll be seen again someday?
