General Discussion / Muncie Rebuild
« on: August 05, 2016, 05:11:53 PM »
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but I am taking my original Muncie into a trans shop to have it rebuilt. I have pulled the tran, but wanted to know what I should be asking when I take it in. Any specifics I should request, talk to the tech about, etc. when I take it in?
It locked up on me while driving and I couldn't get it to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Had to get it towed, then when I got it home and was under it playing with the linkage I came lose and would shift again. While under there I noticed that the two sections weren't lined up and the back section of the tran was twisted about 1/4" from the front. Didn't think that was right so pulled the tran and taking it in, if anything just to know it's been rebuilt and in good shape, cleaned up, etc.
Anyway, any info. from the more intelligent and experienced crowd on this forum would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It's a M21 4 speed out of a 1968 camaro, #s matching to the car. Thanks.

I just appreciate all the information and with all the knowledge you guys have on this topic, and I have none other than I know what to call the part in the discussion, you have convinced me that the best course of action is to take it to someone who knows what they are doing. I'm going to try and spend some time watching them work on the diff. and gain the knowledge that way to begin with like you all have suggested. Thank you very much guys for your input. This site is know my go to site to read and chat and learn.

Ok, next question. I've never changed one of these out. I want to take it back to original from the 3.73 that's in there to a 3.31. How difficult is it to do while the axle is still attached to the car? Or is it better to remove? Thanks.

Thanks Ed, very much appreciate your input. My goal is to slowly restore it back to an original looking SS with a 350. But I understand that without docs I can't for sure prove it. But I'll stay true to form while working on it and make it look as original as I can. It's got a completely different engine from a truck engine I believe in it than the original motor, I'll be looking at the postings under "orphans" to see if the block or docs ever show up for it. But eventually I'll put a warmed up 350 back in it and keep the engine compartment clean. I look forward to the journey.

Here's #'s from the axle, in 2 different postings with pics. The ones with BS is the best pics I can get until I take off the axle and clean it up. The best I can tell it shows BS 05.......

And yes, that's the auction I bought the car from.

Everyone, thanks for the information. It's a 3.73 posi in there, according to the code on the axle supposed to be a 3.31 posi. Appreciate your help guys. Thanks.

Is there a way to tell what type rear-end differential you have in your car by looking, without taking it apart? I attached pics. It's supposed to be a BS 3.31 12 bolt posi for a 68 Camaro, but really feels very low geared. Thanks.
