General Discussion / Re: 68 Z/28 for sale on ebay
« on: November 08, 2021, 04:51:17 PM »
Going thru that list I noticed a possible error. JM states that the Ign.  coil should be a 298 but I'm sure it was a 293 - my '68 , built in June has the original 293 coil. I'm not sure if a marked '293' are available but the 298's are about  a buck and a half.

These dealers think they can just throw crazy numbers up and get a buyer - they have been driving up the prices to a point where you have to print
money to get a classic these days. This Z is no where near worth what they want - they see a JM paper but don't read the fine print.

I seriously would consider this car to be in the $40's, at the least.  I'm in the process of putting together a '68 Z28 tribute with the correct motor and most of the little 'things' that are need to make it appear to be one, and I can say for a fact, it AINT cheap! This car would be a bargain at $40K, and having a JM cert. is not too shabby.

Also, those 'smog' headers are quite the conversation piece. I've never come across those before- perhaps a California car?

General Discussion / Re: repop parts

The issue with parts and imports can be summed up in  3 words - utter political stupidity - this was planned in advance for years but would you think that the idiots in DC  who thought this out would have made the necessary adjustments to keep the shipping operation to continue running efficiently? No, that would be asking too much from these incompetent buffoons:

General Discussion / Re: Questions about a 69 Z/28
« on: September 13, 2021, 04:54:44 PM »
My first '69 was a Cortez w/black vinyl top and blue interior.  At that time I thought the top was cool but realized as time and tastes  have changed, the top
just doesn't appeal to me anymore. And it is also a water trap. I would ditch it but leave the color combo intact.

Regardless of the non-matching motor, you have a car worth the hassle  because of the X33 tag. But it really is up to your gut feeling if putting your $$ , time and sweat into it. What boils down to is you have to really dig  the car and the hobby and not worry about money returned on investment.

Does your rear view mirror vibrate during the rumble?

My worthless two cents...
A 'trim tag' or 'buck tag' is simply a plate attached to the body denoting its options, colors and where it was built. It is NOT a VIN. Since its missing, and what the others have mentioned, for a 'correct' car it will be a slight loss in value. IF you intend to build a modified car, its not really needed anyways. However, ANY potential car worth owning should have one in place. I'm not qualified to comment on a Camaro's reproduction buck tag, or where you can have one made. I do know that in the Ford world Kevin Marti will sell you one for your car...IF you can prove you own it.

Well, maybe on a 68 since the trim tag info had limited information about the options it came with - unfortunately Chevy in their infinite wisdom decided to get lazy on this for whatever reason. But 67's and for the most part 69's they are important. Especially a car as rare as a 67 Z28. Without that tag , assuming no paper work or ownership documents, it's a huge $$ difference.  And yes, it goes without saying that tags can be forged - but it helps to have the knowledge to check and verify.

Looking at that car I can see why they out sold the 6th Gen Camaros by a wide margin - great color too.

Restoration / Re: Value of 1968 RS?SS When Changing Color
« on: July 09, 2021, 01:49:45 AM »
Agree that you will find more buyers interested in the color of the car - and since the car is already “not original”, go with what you like.

My trim tag calls out Dover White - the car was restored in Glacier Blue.

Richard

Glacier Blue is an awesome color , good choice.

Those selling prices are going to cause havoc with the 1st gen Camaro market. You can disagree about the price, I certainly do, but when they sell for that much owners will think to themselves that it's a lottery ticket. Are we  having Camaro shortages? Hell no.

General Discussion / Re: fuel guage readings in console
« on: May 23, 2021, 07:43:42 PM »
Sound like either the sending unit is going bad or you may have a bad ground.  Check all your connections first. A volt/ohm meter would be handy.  the OHM range for the sending unit is 0-90. Not sure which extreme is what but if you fill the tank up take a reading at the sending unit side and see what it measures. You will have to disconnect the plug in the trunk.

Research Topics & Reports / Re: Original ignition coils
« on: May 04, 2021, 03:07:08 PM »
I was scanning thru the MacNeish book expecting to see details about coils - absolutely nothing. This indicates to me that if Jerry didn't list it, it wasn't unique to the 67-68 Z28's. Resistance wires were a common usage, but  the 69 Z used a different coil. According to a Camaro Fact book I have the coil was painted gloss black.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Caveat Emptor...another repro body tag?
« on: April 23, 2021, 05:53:12 PM »
If they filled the rivets properly and put a couple coats of black paint on it, it would be less obvious.

My point is, I see no problems with the codes on the tag. Often when a tag is reproduced, something that was never done at the factory is presented on that tag that makes it an obvious reproduction. e.g putting hounds tooth interior in a convertible that's not a Pace Car. That is what I though William was referring to and did not see it.

No real reason to have a fake tag on this car except for a more desirable color and interior, as 1968, 1969 Van Nuys, and early 1969 Norwoods have no performance options encoded on the trim tag.

I have to agree with this. And there is also the possibility that the tag was removed at one point and put back on. We're talking a 50 year old car that has gone thru so many hands , a lot can happen in that  time span. Not saying there is still a possibility that it is fake but the tag info looks fine to me.

General Discussion / Re: Help to ID this bolt

Saw that on pg 151 but it doesn't show the same bolt/bracket combo as in the one on pg 81 since the air pump is not depicted.

That does appear to be the bolt used for the lower Air Pump bracket. I checked on mine and it does have the GND cable going to it. The thick spacer on the other side of the bracket to the block is painted Chevy orange. The AIM does not show the GND connection.

General Discussion / Re: 1969 Z28 RS Stunning color combo!

Imo, for what it's worth, this dealer is fishing. 99% of them know nothing about these cars but they look at what other dealers ask and always go above because they think they  can sell it. I think it'll be sitting on his floor for a while.  To each his own but I don't like the colors any way. Red reminds me of a fire truck on '69s  ;D. Red looks much better on the 67/68 cars, imo. That particular red actually looks a bit darker to me - maybe it's the clear on it that makes it pop. Factory paint was sprayed using enamel, quick and dirty. Orange peel and runs were the norm.
