Hi all -

Many thanks for the great responses.  I really need help in determining the correct factory screws that were used to attach the bracket to the clock housing.  From the attached GM Floor Mounted Clock Instruction Sheet it's a 10-16 x 5/8" screw, but it doesn't indicate if it's a machine, sheetmetal, hex washer, oval, pan or flat screw and the diameter, such as .36D, .37D, .40D, or .44 Flat.  If anyone can help with the type of screw used/diameter or even better a GM part number that would be fantastic.  gwp4.

Hi - all good responses and very much appreciated.  Specifically, I'm trying to figure out how to fasten the bracket to the clock (GM 987185).  I've attached a photo of the clock assembly kit that came with my purchase showing the screws/nuts/washer.  I've also attached a photo with the holes from the bracket to the clock circled in red.  In researching this a little, GM Instruction Sheet Part No. 3903412 dated 4-11-1966 notes that the bracket holes take a 10-16x5/8 screw, but I'm not sure that's going to work.  Look forward to any assistance.  Many thanks in advance.  gwp4

I'm restoring my 1968 Camaro standard base model coupe 327/210 hp 3-speed back to it's original condition.  I'm curious if the factory used any headliner insulation before the headliner was actually installed.  I'm not referring to headliner sound proofing material.  I appreciate any responses.  Thanks.  gwp4

Hi First Gen Camaro Drivers:

Can anyone confirm that the D91 Bumble Bee Stripe or Front Access Band (GM name) was in the same location for both 1967 and 1968 Camaro models?  I doubt GM would have changed the location from one model year to the next.  There seem to be several different variations and some stripes even go down below the bumper, which I believe is not factory correct.  It seems the stock D91 stripes actually appear to stop at the top of the bumper.

Hi folks -

I believe I might need a bracket on the bottom of the clock (see photos) in order to attach it to the bracket on the console (see additional photo).  Hope someone has some advice on where the bracket can be found.  Finally, does anyone have any experience dealing with "The Clock Works" in Eagle River, WI auto clock specialists?  Thinking of having them check out my floor clock to make sure it works.  Once again, appreciate any help/comments.  gwp4

Hi Camaro experts:

I'm restoring my 1968 standard base-model Camaro with 327 3-spd back to its original condition.  I have a hole in the carpeting just in front of the shifter (see first photo) and was told by the original owner several years ago that it was for a floor-mounted clock (second photo).  I purchased a clock for a 1968 Camaro (see third photo) and am wondering if it's correct for the car since I'm not sure floor-mounted clocks came with manual transmissions.  Also, did some floor-mounted clocks come with bezels (fourth photo) and others didn't? Finally, who sells install kits for the floor mounted clocks and where can it be repaired?  Many thanks for any assistance.  gwp4

General Discussion / Sound Deadener

Hi folks -

I'd like to keep my 1968 Camaro as stock as possible for judging purposes.  However, I'm getting suggestions to put some sound deadener in the car to make it a little quieter.  I'm hesitant because I believe it didn't come from the factory with any (as far as I know).  It's a noisy car, but it really doesn't seem to bother me.  Did Chevy use any sound deadener back in 1968 or was the jute on the back of the carpeting the best they could do.  If any one recommends a sound deadener I'd like to get some suggestions on the various makes (a lot out there).  I've heard of Dynamat, Second Skin, Hushmat and Fatmat are popular. Maybe one that's thin and not noticeable under the carpeting might work.  However, Fatmat seems to have some problems in warmer climates and I've read that people have complained it smells like asphalt.  In any case, welcome comments from the first-gen Camaro experts who frequent this forum.  gwp4

Hi First-Gen Camaro Experts -

I'm trying to identify/get a GM part number for a rubber stopper that the pedal on the parking brake assembly hits up against when the handle is pulled to release.  It also keeps the pedal from coming up to high.  I have a 1968 Camaro base model 327/210 2bbl with a standard interior and May 1968 production date.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.  gwp4

I really appreciate your reply.  I'd like to get a little clarity on what you noted.  What is the date that the "D76" on the M/C indicates?  Also, what does the "236" or "238" on the M/C specify?  Also, I didn't find any cast casting date.  Did all of the M/C's have them?  I also haven't been able to determine if there is a "BS" application stamp on the M/C, but my car had manual drum brakes all around.  I've attached a few photos for your reference.  My car was assembled on May 14, 1968.  Many thanks.  gwp4

I have a 1968 Camaro 327/210 hp with manual drum brakes all around.  The brake master cylinder has casting number 5452310 with "D76" and "256" or "258" stamped on the side of the cylinder.  Can anyone tell me the factory correct color for the brake lid and securing bar?  Many thanks.  gwp4

Hi there - all good advice.  Just so I'm clear and to be 100 percent correct.  My car has a 05B build date or May 14, 1968 so I could go with a D91 front access band or Bumble Bee stripe with a gap in the stripe for a 327 emblem and it would be factory correct, i.e., an option that was available on all Camaros with my build date (May 14, 1968), 3-spd manual trans, 2bbl, 327/210 hp.  An earlier post here saying to use the D90 sport stripe with a May 68 build date kinda threw me.

Hey first gen Camaro experts -

All great advice.  I'm partial to the D91 "Front Access Band" or "Bumble Bee" full stripe and accompanying pinstripe with a space for the 327 emblem.  I understand that this was an option on all cars except SS for the duration of the 1968 build year.  However, I've also heard that early 68's got the D91 bumble bee stripe and later 68's got the D90 "Hockey Stick" stripe.  Not sure when it might have switched over from the D91 to the D90.  As I noted, I have a base/standard model 1968 327/210 hp with 3-spd manual transmission with a build date of 14 May 1968 (05B 1968) in Norwood, OH.  The VIN is 124378N432654.  I just wanted to confirm with the first-gen Camaro experts out there that if I go with a D91 Bumble Bee that I'm correct for judging competition.  Appreciate the help.  gwp4

Hello First-Gen Camaro Experts -

I'm looking for a little help decoding the numbers on my master brake cylinder (mbc) which I thought was original to the car, but now I'm not so sure.  The car was manufactured/assembled at the Norwood, Ohio plant on May 14, 1968 and is a base model 327 3-spd Camaro with manual drum brakes all around.  I can make out a "D76" and "256" on the cylinder.  The casting number "5452310 Y" is clearly stamped on the cylinder.  I'm not sure what the D76 and 256 signify although I believe they might be the foundry pattern number and Julian date code.  I also think the correct application code should be "BS" for a 1968 drum brake master cylinder, but I can't make-out the stamp on the cylinder.  Perhaps 50 years has done some damage to the location.  Any help in determining whether the mcb is actually correct for the car and decoding the numbers would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.  gwp4

Hi Camaro experts:

I have a 1968 base model standard Camaro (not an RS, SS or Z-28) 327 SB 2BBL manufactured on May 14, 1968 in Norwood, OH.  I'm getting the car back to factory original condition and wondered if there was any way to determine whether the bumble bee stripe (either D91 or D90?) would have been on the car from the factory.  Unfortunately, I don't have any of the original documentation on the car which would have likely indicated whether the strip was ordered as an option.  Many thanks.  gwp4
