Restoration / Correct Color for 1968 Camaro Standard Wheels

Hey Camaro drivers:

Need a little help from the experts out there. Just bought some original 1968 14x6 standard wheels to use with P01 wheel covers for that original look with my 1968 Camaro base model (no SS/RS/Z28). They need to be painted black (I believe), but not sure the exact color, semi-gloss, gloss? Trying to do a nice restoration so the correct paint color/texture and brand of paint are important.  Any recommendations that might pass the judges muster? Thanks in advance. GWP4

Restoration / 1968 Camaro Rally Wheels - Recommendations

Hi Camaro Experts:

I’m planning on purchasing some 14x6 Rally wheels for my base model standard 1968 Camaro with drum brakes all around.  I know the rims should be argent silver and am looking at Derby-style center caps with “Chevrolet Motor Division” stamped in the center and the trim ring.  I’m striving for originality.  Does anyone know whether the center caps and trim rings should be chrome or stainless steel?  Also, should the trim ring have full rim style mounting clips or the style that uses 4 clips to retain the trim ring to the edge of the rim (GM #3923522).  Finally, any recommendations on a retailer for the rims, center caps, and trim rings?  Many thanks.  GWP4

I'd like to get some Rally Wheels for my 1968 Camaro and want to make sure they are as close to the originals as possible.  I've taken the attached two photos from CRG website and would like to know if someone can advise what it says in the center cap.  Just can't make it out.  Many thanks.  Tommy 68

Hello Camaro owners:

I'm entering my 1968 Camaro into judging competition. I need to have bias ply tires on the car for originality and would like to know if anyone can tell me what was the brand of tire put on the car from the factory (Firestone, Goodyear, other?), the size of the tire (775-14? or F78-14?), and finally what was the actual size of the pinstripe (3/8", 7/8" or 1"?), which was an option. For background, my car was manufactured in May 1968, standard 327 mt, base model (not a Z28, SS, or RS). I also have stock hubcaps to use with the car, but am wondering if the chrome finish Chevy Rally wheels with Chevrolet Derby cap would also meet the originality requirement for a 68 Camaro. General Discussion / Correct Shocks for 1968 Camaro LF-7 327 SB

Hi Camaro experts - 

I really need some help on the correct spiral shocks for my 1968 Camaro 327 SB base LF-7 model, no A/C, sport coupe, 3-speed, no RPO F41 heavy suspension system.  In researching shocks, according to the 1969 P&A 34 Revised July 1, 1969 catalog 7.345 Absorber Assy (7.242-7.345), the 67-69 Camaro Delco front spiral shock should be GM part number 3192953. Also, in the same catalog, 7.345-7.346, the 68 Camaro (327) (exc: 4-speed) rear spiral Delco shock mono-leaf should be GM part number 3192976 11.55 unit. However, in the 1968 Camaro Factory Assembly Instruction Manual, UPC 3 A4, the front spiral Delco shock absorber is GM part number 3192826 (3192477 is RPO F41). In the same manual, page UPC 4 B3, the rear mono leaf spiral Delco shock absorber is GM part number 3192831.  Also, some Camaro parts retailers have the front spiral shocks with GM part number 3192419 and GM part number 3192477 and the rear mono leaf with GM part number 3192831 and GM 3192420.  I'm really hoping some Camaro experts can really help me out and provide the correct GM part numbers for the front and rear spiral shocks without a heavy-duty suspension system for a basic 1968 Camaro.  Finally, since my car was manufactured May 8, 1968, would a good date code for the shocks be Feb 7, 1968?  Many thanks in advance.   GWP4

Hi folks -

Can anyone confirm that the Ward Antenna Company manufactured the AM front-mount telescopic antennas for the 1967 to early-mid 1968 Camaros?  I thought it might have been AC Delco but now I'm hearing it might be Ward Antenna, which has since gone out of business.  Thanks.

Restoration / 1968 Camaro Exhaust Manifolds/Dip Stick tube color

Hi all - I'm trying to get my 1968 Camaro back to original.  I have a 327 sb 210 hp mt no ac with smog system, which was removed years ago.  The original owner of the car drilled out the holes and there is no seat left for the air pipe manifold to sit against to make its seal.  Would it be possible to have the original manifolds "redrilled" or "rethreaded"  so I can install some original smog tubes I purchased or do I need to find either original manifolds or aftermarket ones?  The exhaust manifold casting numbers 3872730 RH and 3892683 LH are correct for the car.   Also, does anyone know the correct color for the dip stick tube?  I've heard it should be painted semi-gloss black or left natural galvanized steel.  Many thanks in advance.

General Discussion / Recommendations for Painting Metal Dash

Hi all -

I'm restoring my 1968 Camaro with a black interior.  I want to keep it as stock in appearance as possible.  I'm starting to paint the metal portion of the dash and wonder if anyone can give me recommendations.  I've heard that SEM paints are good.  Would the SEM trim black be the best match for keeping the car stock or would SEM black lacquer be the better choice?  SEM trim black seems a little dull in the finish and doesn't resemble the original, which had a more glossy look. Also, would using a spray bomb be good or should I use a spray gun?  Finally, should I first use 400 grit sand paper to get it smooth, prime then use 600 grit on the primer before applying the lacquer paint?  Many thanks and look forward to the help.

General Discussion / 1968 Camaro 327 sb crankshaft heads

Hello fellow Camaro drivers:

I need to have the heads replaced on my 1968 Camaro 327 sb stock engine.  The original engine shop that did the work on the car machined the heads incorrectly (crooked) and the bore for the valve stem is off slightly.  I want to keep the engine as stock as possible.  Would Edelbrock heads be as close to stock or are GM heads better?  Really open to suggestions/recommentations.  Many thanks.

Restoration / Best type of paint for restoring 1968 Camaro Butternut Yellow

Hi fellow Camaro owners:

What is the best paint to use to restore a 1968 Camaro butternut yellow (original color)?  I currently have water-borne PPG yellow paint on the car with a clear coat.  It looks pretty good but seems to not quite match the acrylic butternut yellow manufactured by Dupont (shade lighter).  I'd like to make the car look as stock/original as possible.  Also, if I decide to have the car repainted with all the trim removed does anyone have a ballpark idea of what it may cost?   Many thanks.
