General Discussion / 1968 Camaro - Bumble Bee Stripe
« on: July 27, 2020, 02:15:37 AM »
Hi Camaro experts:

I have a 1968 base model standard Camaro (not an RS, SS or Z-28) 327 SB 2BBL manufactured on May 14, 1968 in Norwood, OH.  I'm getting the car back to factory original condition and wondered if there was any way to determine whether the bumble bee stripe (either D91 or D90?) would have been on the car from the factory.  Unfortunately, I don't have any of the original documentation on the car which would have likely indicated whether the strip was ordered as an option.  Many thanks.  gwp4

Restoration / 1968 Camaro (Non-RS) Grill Restoration
« on: May 23, 2020, 04:00:36 AM »

Hi Camaro drivers:

I'm restoring my base model 1968 Camaro (non-RS) back to factory original in preparation for judging competition.  I've purchased the upper and lower grill moldings and right/left bezels, which appear to be satin (or matte??) black, and now need some guidance on correct color for the grill front.  I've read that the grill for a 1968 non-RS should be argent silver with semi-gloss black on the grill front.  I'm hoping some first-gen experts can weigh in and comment on the correct semi-gloss black paint to use on the front.  Looking for body-shop grade paint.  Many thanks.  gwp4

Originality / 327 Emblem for 1968 Camaro Fender
« on: May 05, 2020, 04:37:06 PM »
Hi Camaro drivers:

I have a 1968 Camaro and need to attach the 327 fender emblems.  I understand that the factory used "PAL" nuts to fix the stud on the emblem to the back of the fender.  I need to get the correct size pal nut and hope that someone might know the stud size on the emblem.  Finally, did the factory use zinc-coated stainless pal nuts rather than dark phosphated ones?

Many thanks in advance.  gwp4

Originality / Correct Factory Location of Engine Decals
« on: April 07, 2020, 02:22:18 AM »
Hi First Gen Camaro drivers:

For judging competition, I’m interested in the correct location for the Air Cleaner Service, Anti-freeze Thermostat, and Emission decals on a base-model 1968 Camaro 327/210 hp with A.I.R. equipment, no a/c, and manual transmission.  I’ve attached a couple of old photos of my engine bay (it’s been significantly rehabilitated since the photos) to help identify the decals/locations.  Many thanks.  gwp4

Originality / Pitman Arm Nut and Lock Washer - correct factory finish?
« on: March 18, 2020, 05:11:47 AM »
Hi Camaro owners:

Looking to restore my 1968 Camaro back to its original condition.  Does anyone have information as to the correct finish on the Pitman arm nut (GM part 5667628) and the lock washer (GM part 5697702) for a manual steering gearbox?  Should the parts be phosphated or natural metal to be factory correct?  Many thanks.

Originality / Correct AC Delco Fuel Pump
« on: March 01, 2020, 08:28:09 AM »
Hi Camaro drivers:

Need some help. Does anyone know the correct AC Delco fuel pump model number for 5/16" intake and 5/16" outlet fuel lines? Did AC Delco even make fuel pumps for 5/16" lines all around? Seems almost all of the fuel pumps for the late-67 and early 68 Camaros are either for a 5/16" outlet and 3/8" intake or 3/8" for both outlet and intake. My car is a 1968 Camaro SB 327/210 hp no ac 2bbl base model LF7 with a build date of May 14, 1968.

Thanks in advance for the guidance/advice. gwp4

Hi Camaro experts:

I have a 1968 Camaro 327/210 hp V8 LF7 sb base model with a build date of May 14, 1968.  I'm very interested in learning the correct fuel line size for the car.   I've heard both 5/16" and 3/8" and want to know what the factory installed.  Getting it back to its original condition.  Thanks.  gwp4

Originality / Correct 1968 Camaro Smog Pump Bracket Bolts
« on: January 04, 2020, 06:11:24 AM »
Hi Camaro drivers/owners:

I have a 1968 Camaro and am trying to get it back to original. I'm having a really hard time finding the correct bolt and washer that attached the Chevy orange smog pump bracket to the engine block.  There must have been three bolts since there are three holes on the bracket.  I'm really hoping that someone can help me with the GM part numbers, size, if a washer was used, photo of the bolt head so I can see the configuration, color, etc.  Many thanks in advance.  gwp4

Restoration / Cleaning Original Manual Steering Gearbox
« on: January 03, 2020, 07:12:37 AM »
Hi guys -

I've got my original manual steering gearbox and it's got 51 years of crud on there.  What should I use to get it all off without harming any of the original skin/paint?  What was the original color and is there anything out there in a spray paint that comes close? Would a little soap and water and a some wire brush be pretty harmless on the gearbox?  Are there holes I need to plug?  Also, is there a reputable company which specializes in restoring old manual steering gearboxes?  Finally, is it recommended to just put as much grease inside the box to keep it smooth and operating easily?  Is STP any good?  Look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.  It's the original gearbox so I'm trying to save it for judging competition.  Cheers, gwp4

General Discussion / Factory Correct Smog Pump Bracket Bolts/Spacers
« on: December 15, 2019, 10:18:01 AM »
Hi Camaro folks:

I'm interested in learning the factory correct bolt that was used with the original small block smog pump lower mounting bracket for a 1968 Camaro 327/210 HP.  The bolt attached the bracket to the engine block and I believe the head was painted orange.  I've attached a photo of the bracket.  Specifically, I'd like to know the GM part number for the bolts (I believe three of them were required), any headmarkings, if they were phosphated, and whether if spacers were also required.  Finally, if spacers were necessary, I'd be very interested in the GM part number and if they were phosphated as well.  Many thanks in advance.  gwp4

PS - the 1968 Camaro FAIM page 81 UPC 6 A6 doesn't have the GM part numbers for the bolts/spacers clearly identified.

General Discussion / 1968 Camaro Distributor and Vacuum Advance Pod
« on: December 10, 2019, 06:17:20 AM »
Hi Folks -

I've got a 1968 Camaro 327/210 SB no ac 3spd and am looking for an original AC Delco 1111440 distributor and the factory correct AC Delco Vacuum Advance Pod.  Unfortunately, I can't locate the GM part number on the pod or the correct page in the FAIM where it might be located.  Any Camaro experts have the info?  Many thanks.  gwp4

Originality / Factory Correct Valve Stems
« on: November 11, 2019, 09:41:54 PM »
Hi Camaro owners:

I'm getting my 1968 base model Camaro ready for judging and have encountered a dilemma.  I recently purchased 5 original NOS Dill GM valve stems and caps to use with my 14x6 FC May 1968 date-coded steel wheels and original PO1 wheel covers.  The NOS Dill GM valve stems are about 1 3/4" in length.  Now, it seems the stems are too short to use.  Can anyone advise if extensions were common back in 1968 and what would be the correct extension length?  Finally, where can NOS original extensions be purchased today?  Many thanks for all the help.  gwp4

Decoding/Numbers / Production Run/Correct OE Natural Steel Brake Lines
« on: November 08, 2019, 04:13:19 AM »
Hi all -

I'm thinking of ordering some OE natural steel brake lines and the company notes that there are different brake line kits for 1968 Camaros with serial numbers above 135,000 vs those with serial numbers below 135,000.  I have a 1968 standard coupe base model 327/210 hp Camaro built in Norwood, Ohio on May 14, 1968 with drum brakes all around and VIN number 124378N432654.  I understand that the production dates for 1968 Camaros in Norwood were August 1967 to July 1968 and that 235,147 1968 model Camaros were built at the Norwood plant.  In researching the topic, I also learned that Chevrolet started the vehicle series with 300001 for all 1968 Camaro models.  So my question is whether my car is below 135,000 or above 135,000 on the serial number so I order the correct brake lines.  Many thanks to the experts who can point me in the right direction.   GWP4

Restoration / Backspace Question on Rally Wheels
« on: August 13, 2019, 04:20:06 AM »
Hi Camaro drivers:

What is the factory correct backspace on 14x6 aftermarket Rally wheels for a 1968 Camaro?  Everything is stock on the car except the manual steering which was swapped out for power steering.  Many thanks.  Tommy68

Originality / 1968 Camaro Factory Correct Bumper Jack Assembly
« on: June 17, 2019, 04:12:34 AM »
Hi Camaro experts:

There's been quite a bit of info tossed about regarding factory correct bumper jack assemblies for Norwood and LA-manufactured first-generation Camaros.  Per NCRS, I have a 1968 Camaro built on May 14, 1968 at the Norwood plant.  I'm trying to get it ready for judging competition and need some CRG expert guidance on the correct jack assembly/parts.  Specifically, I'm looking for help on the following:

--)  Correct length of jack assembly shaft or mast?.  I’ve gotten two measurements so far, 32 5/32” and 32 ½”;
--)  Did the shaft or mast have anything stamped on it?;
--)  Did the shaft or mast have a date code?;
--)  Did the rivet on the shaft or mast have a date code?;
--)  Did the load rest have "CAMARO 1968" or "CAMARO and then underneath "1968 UN" stamped on it?  I’ve seen both so I’m wondering which is correct;
--)  Did the tire iron have anything stamped on it?;
--)  Finally, I understand that the jack bracket assembly with shaft jack straps had a date code.  For cars manufactured in May 1968 would a proper date code be 8B, 8C, or 8D (Feb/Mar/Apr), i.e., 90 days before the production date? Finally, is 3919088 the correct GM part number for the assembly?

I really appreciate all the help/input and agree with another CRG member that given the various parts and manufacturers who contributed to GM bumper jack assemblies it might be time for the good folks at CRG to draft a section documenting for the record the factory correct assemblies with available options for first-generation Camaros.  Unfortunately, while helpful, FAIM page UPC 10 A2 doesn’t seem to cut it.  Many thanks in advance.  gwp4
