Might want to check the powervalves in the carb. A backfire usually takes them out.

Seriously, there are so many nicely restored cars with these on them folks restoring theses cars are actually thinking they belong there now.

Seriously, thanks for the helpful hint on the Av-gas. I never even thought of that. If you've prevented even one more burn victim you've given back to the hobby more than any tech tip will ever. I hope for a quick recovery for you.

That's the age old question isn't it, what is a real Z and one that's not. The ZL-1 registry has some questionable cars what with full re-bodies etc. Lots of asterisks I suppose.

There are electrical contact points in them that wear out. Basically, it is spring driven mechanism that re-winds itself automatically every two or three minutes. As the spring unwinds, the electrical contacts come together and this fires a solenoid that re-winds the mechanism. What kills them is when the battery has a low voltage. If it drops below around 12 volts or so it doesn't provide enough power to re-wind and the contacts just sit and arc burn. This is a good reason to always unhook the battery when the car is sitting for any length of time. There is also a mod to add a xener diode to the circuit to protect it.
I have replaced the contact points with sterling silver contact points that are used on tattoo machines:

I took a dental drill (a Dremel will work too) and carefully machined away the old contacts and then used a high conductivity adhesive like this: MG Chemicals 8331-14G 2-part Silver Conductive Epoxy Adhesive, High Conductivity
to glue the new contacts in place. A little cleaning and lubing and it works like brand new and the contacts should last a long time and you will have the satisfaction of restoring your clock. The quartz movements just don't look right in a 60's car in my opinion.

Kind of hokey to use the RCA cable end. The SS contacts are made for this type of application.

While on this topic, just how long can one expect an NOS AC fuel pump to last with today's ethanol fuel? Is there anything that can be done short of a rebuild to prolong the life (fuel additives, draining the fuel from the pump, etc)?

Found a # from '09 on this website. It did ring and got a generic VM. Left a msg. Doing the research, sounds like a good product, inexpensive and easy to use. Is there another company that offers the same type of product?I know a Chinese filter element company(www.zhehanfilter.com) can offer similar products. You can ask them on their website.

I have also found that mild heating helps the Evap-o-rust. I have an old pressure cooker that I leave the vent open and turn on low. Works good with the acetone-atf penetrating oil trick too, but I'm chicken and put the whole thing outside in case the internal thermostat goes bad and overheats and catches fire.
