General Discussion / Re: Original Brake Hoses for '69 Z28
« on: January 23, 2022, 05:23:41 PM »
Thanks very much for the reply, James.

18 point is pretty close to 1/4" so at least I think have that right.

I was hoping for some info on the best way to make the stencil itself.  Using a sign cutter with the vinyl material and PC software.  I've watched a few Youtube videos and I think I have the overall process down, just was looking for some hints on the details.  Things like the materials used etc.  The small characters and the "weeding" seems the most difficult.

I did finally I think decipher the date code scheme.  I believe it goes like this:

Date code is in my case  "B 11 03 0" which is March 11, 1970 second shift of the form working shift(letter, 2nd=B), day of month(2 digits=11), month (2 digits=03) and last number of year (1970=0)

I've pretty much determined that the font is a Arial Rounded at 18 point.

Does anyone have any clues on the stencil?  I have access to a vinyl signcutting machine but what type of material to use?

Maybe this?

There was a BB 69 Z28 running around Dayton-Xenia in the late 70', early 80's that was owned by Lloyd Stauffer (sp).  Beautiful car.  Lloyd lost his life working at local Olds dealership pulling a gas tank on a customers car and the trouble light broke setting the service area on fire.  Really sad.  always wondered whatever became of that car.  Anybody know?

I found an old SS single sink on CL.  Cut a disc form some SS and pop-riveted-and used Ultra grey to seal it.

It could fit my hood latch assembly and hood hinges (one at a time).

Reviving this topic for a question.  Does anyone happen to know the correct font and size and ink-paint used for the stenciling?

thanks.

Dave

Sorry for the hi-jack, but is there a link to a thread on how to refinish the smog tubes?

Originality / Re: Comfort Weave Seats
« on: August 21, 2021, 10:50:07 PM »
Took about 6 months to get my 4 yards of Comfortweave.  Got a local guy rebuilding my 1970 seats.  It looks like I will have at least 2 yards leftover.  Trying to keep as much of the original material as possible.

Usually the step at the main web area (to the left in the photo) is enough to prevent the sleeve from moving down.  Wondering of something else happened in that area.  That is right where the rod swings though.

The 7 in Traveling Typewriter has an extension from the top horizontal line down.  It may be the best you find.  The extension could always be manually clipped off the stamp easy enough.

Some of the carb photos have different "4"s", some with open tops and some with closed.

Restoration / Re: Shock paint

I appreciate you posting this, James, but I've come to find out that the local Nason jobber closed doors due to Covid and the Cincinnati store (50 miles) only keeps bankers hours and really only wants to do deliveries to local shops, no walk-ins!

I even called Nason and they referred me to their "local" dealer which was O-Reilly Auto Parts.  When I went there they laughed and said they could order a gallon of white, black or primer and that's it.  No mixing.

I defaulted to the Quanta shock paint which i think is a re-packaged Seymore spray-bomb stuff.

Thanks, though.  Hope it helps others.

Mild Modifications / Re: Distributor conversion to electronic ignition

THIS is the one I've used on my 68 Camaro and my 69 Corvette for several years now with no issues. Works like it's supposed to work.

Ed

Wish they would update this with a rev limiter.
Even so, with the limited miles most of our cars see, wondering why you would want to change out the points?  Not just that, but there is something rewarding to me about whipping out the old dwell meter and the allen wench and setting the dwell.  Kind of take me back.

There is also a very nice Chevrolet Performance MLS gasket in 0.028 compressed thickness available that may be worth a look.  Much less cost than Cometic.
