Trans-Am Camaros / Re: Crossram manifold
« on: October 08, 2019, 12:08:46 AM »
The distribution dams were a try-it and see how it works experiment. (These type of manifold distribution corrections were done well into the 1980's at some speed shops I am aware of. Fuel comes out of suspension and needs to be channeled to try to even cylinder a/f ratios!)The dams were done with epoxy and wire (reportedly) on a set of O-dash numbered experimental developmental manifolds (reported to be 4 or 5 of them) They were being sent back and forth and developed ASAP. There was tremendous pressure to get them done fast and some were raced in the developmental configuration. When they were casting the first early production pieces, an error was made configuring the dams in the molds and the dams were reversed front to rear-an apparent last minute lay-up under duress. And undid what they were trying to do. The error was quickly corrected and the regular production manifolds were cast correctly. Wayne Guinns Crossram guide, Mark Donohues "Unfair Advantage" and Smokey Yunicks wonderful autobiography have some great insights to what was going on.

The runners on the bottom of the manifolds were to direct fuel toward cylinders that were running leaner. The fuel comes out of suspension easily and form rivers that puddle and trickle down the long runner tubes. The channels were an attempt to even the fuel mixture on cylinders that tended to run lean and guide it away from the rich ones. Chevrolet engineering and folks like Smokey Yunick found this out and re-routed the fuel to try to improve things. Smokey even built a clear top to view when revved up full song on a dynamometer when he was investigating this. Hope he was wearing some Kevlar where it counted!

General Discussion / AIM Question--

The Assembly Information Manual has special notation at the lower right of some pages of "DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED". It is just above the revision record box. A number of pages show it was later removed. I noted the M20 pages on the 1969 manual have several marked. Is this something to do with an outside sourced part like a Hurst shifter or similar? C60 pages have some notation about this- Curiosity about what this references?? Recording number of times installed??

What happens in the Fisher Body Plant stays in the Fisher Body Plant. I think there are a lot of questions on what went on there. Not many answers-

General Discussion / 68-69 Rear Armrest Ashtray design
« on: June 12, 2019, 10:46:22 PM »
Is there any information on the rear armrest ashtray lid designs? I understand the 67 version is a larger size. The 68-69 is the same but smaller size. My confusion is with the 68-69 ribbed vs. smooth design. Seems to me I heard a long time back that the originals came as a 3-ribbed design?? Possibly the smooth top was a reproduction and possibly a GM replacement sold at the dealer? Really not much information on these and I suspect there is a lot of misinformation out there on these--

It is easy to get complacent about gasoline. Any fuel leak is hazardous and concerning. Be wary at all times about any signs of fuel around your vehicle and correct it. Taking anything out after storage or repair is especially a time to be wary. Thanks for the reminder and hope you heal up quickly!

General Discussion / Re: Fold Down Rear Seat Panels
« on: May 19, 2019, 11:21:09 PM »
But when the fold down seat is specified, the arm rests and associated tabs are used. If it is a standard trim interior, it would necessitate a cut off standard panel--suspect this is what they did---
OR----Maybe they placed a deluxe rear side panel??? The chrome trim strip would not line up, the vinyl ribbing would not be present and it would look out of place.

I am understanding the deluxe interior version well and thank you for the clarification. The biggest confusion is how the standard interior version might have been done. The side panel for a standard interior should ALSO have the lower removed--- so that it would not hit the 2 armrest forward tabs? Still unclear how the panel beneath the armrest, for standard trim version, would be-

68 model year with fold down rear seat is my interest.
If the interior is standard, then the side panel is the regular standard panel? That panel has 2 chrome strips on it. Seems the lower one could interfere with the top of the arm rest when installed?? It seems that the factory would have to use the standard panel-- as none of the others would fit (convertible) or align properly (deluxe). Were the panels full height under the arm rests?
If deluxe fold down, then it came with the regular deluxe side panels?? The deluxe regular rear seats came with arm rests also- but only have an upper chrome trim strip? Seems the arm rests would go over these ones well for either seat.

I have never been very clear on how the rear panels were handled on the fold down seat coupe applications. I realize they used the added on arm rests common to the convertible.
I am unclear how the side panels were handled though. Were the quarter side panels full height and the arm rests put over them, or were they a foreshortened panel that was a different part? Or perhaps a cut off full panel?? Any difference deluxe vs standard interiors?

I had a similar experience like this a long time ago. I think it MAY work for a 67 sender module when used in a 68-69 application. It was never intended to have a bulb in the module socket on any Camaro application.
