Originality / engine bright accent
« on: February 16, 2017, 03:02:16 PM »
Yes - I'm going there, hate me if you must. But while digging to find an answer to a different question, I discovered something in the 1969 sales manual that MAY end this debate. Attached is a picture of a Day 0 Nova L48 which has been used as reference. The bright engine accent  for the chevy models differed per model and per engine, but in the case of the Nova and Camaro the L48 was the same by including the bright accent. (The L48 for a Chevelle did not include the bright engine accent, for example.)

Originality / 1969 L48 oil cap - painted or chrome?
« on: January 14, 2017, 12:03:48 AM »
I've always believed the oil cap was painted with the valve covers, but my restoration guy says the oil cap is chrome with the chrome air cleaner cover - bright accents. And so far its the only thing we haven't agreed on. I need something definitive, or I owe him lunch. I've been through all of my restoration books and I can't find a thread on here. He has a local car museum owner...

Sadly when I pulled out my original chevrolet sales album from 1969, it shows a black and white picture on the SS options page "special bright accents on engine" with chrome everything including finned valve covers. Doh!

Thanks!

General Discussion / 69 SS350 4speed reference pics?
« on: January 07, 2017, 04:12:27 PM »
My 69 has been in the paint shop for a bit over a year now. The contract said it would be complete last May, but that's a different story I guess. Truth is, he's doing a great job slowly - and I'm not going to complain about that.

I've had the car for about 16 yrs I guess, and its always been missing too much for it to be local show worthy. My wife finally told me to get a paint job last year. My paint guy has convinced me to let him freshen the engine bay too, while he has the fenders off.

Anyway, I've done tons of research over the years, bought lots of NOS parts and chrome saving for this. There are still things I just can't haven't found yet (like the missing smog equip).

So if this is fun for you guys, I will post pics and feel free to be honest and brutal. I really want to do what is correct. This can be a local show car but not a trailer queen.

Thanks in advance!

Decoding/Numbers / Water Pump 3927170 date code
« on: January 07, 2017, 05:02:00 AM »
Could someone help me with this please? It looks like O27 8. Could it be G27?

This came off my 69 SS350, early Nov 68 build. There was an aftermarket water pump on the car when I bought it a long time ago, and then at some time replaced that pump with this one. But I can't remember where this one came from, maybe it was junk parts in the car. Honestly I've lost track, and it didn't matter much to me back then.

And were these painted orange on the car to match the block?

Thanks - Andy

Restoration / 69 interior red vinyl dye for 719 code
« on: September 25, 2016, 04:15:28 PM »
I painted the repro 8 track cover with the red vinyl dye purchased from camaro central. Its close, but not close enough. Compared to the original rear panel it seems more orange tinted and not pink enough. Any suggestions please?

My biggest concern is that I planned to touch up all of the original panels before they went back into the car, but now I think the shades of touch-ups would be noticeable. Maybe that's a bad idea, can someone suggest a way to clean these safely?

Thanks!

Restoration / 1969 front fender mounting tabs?
« on: September 21, 2016, 03:22:14 PM »
Hi - what are these tabs for on the front of my 69 fenders? I know its not the RS option and these don't mate with the grill.

Thanks - Andy

Restoration / XT wheel paint
« on: May 27, 2016, 09:05:40 PM »
My restoration guy is getting ready to sand blast and paint our XT wheels. Could someone tell me if they were painted black first, then painted body color on the entire wheel (inside, rear and front)? Or does the inside and rear remain painted black, with overspray from the front being painted? Any suggestions I can give him please?

Thanks - Andy

Restoration / 69 SS350 CHQ template for 350 emblems
« on: May 17, 2016, 03:04:53 PM »
My camaro is in the restoration shop, and one of the issues is that the fenders were from a Z28. So I bought the templates to correctly position the emblems. According to the template, the 350 emblem can either be aligned with the side marker or just below it - either placement is correct.

Is there a consensus on which placement is more correct? :)

Thanks - Andy

Does anyone recognize this hose? It may have been with a cowl air cleaner, but I don't know for sure. Dated 08/18/92.

Restoration / door sills travesty
« on: March 29, 2016, 09:42:52 PM »
Took a bunch of metal to the most reputable chrome and metal shop in our area, and they did this to my original door sills. Polished them to a unholy chrome like finish. You would think they would at least have the common sense to not polish the fisher tag. These were original and well worn, so I thought they would do a nice light polishing because they would know what these are supposed to look like. I can't even rivet new emblems because they ruined the tread too. Just unbelievable. The lesson is to not assume anyone knows what they are doing, even a specialty shop.

I'm looking for a decent pair of used original door sills, or a quality reproduction I guess.  :'(

Would this be painted interior color, like the console pad? Any pics of one of these installed?

Thanks!

General Discussion / 69 original rear bumper identification
« on: March 02, 2016, 08:24:08 PM »
Before I spend $400 buckaroos to rechrome my rear bumper, is there any way I can ID it as an original? The brackets and bolts are definitely original, but that doesn't mean hoohah. I'm questioning everything now...

Thanks - Andy

General Discussion / Door handles - are these original?
« on: February 29, 2016, 09:53:10 PM »
12 years ago I pulled the pitted door handles off and stored them, replaced with repros. As I gather up my chrome for replating, I decided to check them for numbers to confirm they are original before spending $100 each. No numbers, so I dig around a bit on ebay, and I see conflicting examples of NOS handles. Now I wonder if these are even original. Can anyone guide me on how to confirm? Is it weight, are there any measurements, or should I be able to tell by the mechanism?

As always - thanks again!

General Discussion / Restoration blues
« on: February 25, 2016, 02:21:36 PM »
My SS350 has been in restoration now for 3 months at a local bodyshop. At first I was excited about it, but as the weeks have passed and I haven't seen much progress passed the stripping stage I have gone through some withdrawals. At first I couldn't stop buying odd stuff for the camaro off ebay and I was visiting the shop every day. Then I couldn't stop looking at new car projects, as if the camaro is no longer mine. I've found a local 69 mercury cyclone cobra jet 428 that is a complete basket case, that I can't stop thinking about even though I know the restoration will cost far more than the car's final value. And I keep looking at the Hamilton cars on Craigslist. My latest stage is selling off all of my rare camaro parts that I've been hoarding, and convinced my wife I need a new project.

I really need my camaro back.
