General Discussion / Re: adjustable fuel gauge module?
« on: November 25, 2015, 09:20:32 PM »
Used to use them all the time.  Had a few in town but my favorite was an old mom and pop Sohio station ran by an elderly couple.  Drove a 56 nomad daily and his wife would come out and fill it up.  She knew exactly where the gas fill was on the car.   The younger pups at other stations would walk around the car 2-3 times before finally asking me where it was.  After I told them, I then watched as they fiddled with it.  Eventually I had to get out and open it for them, lol.
Did this right up into the late 80's and early 90's until eventually the larger chain stores ran them out of business.

Yeah I don't want to be waiting too long.  Good news is I was just told of a few places I haven't heard of so I have some options.  Time to create a shopping cart, Christmas is a little early for me this year, lol.

Thanks Austin,
The only shopping around I do is between those 3 I mentioned because I'm not aware of anyone else that sells stuff, lol.   They all appear to pretty much sell the same stuff, some called good repo and the other repo stuff they like to call concours correct.
I've never been much of an ebay fisher mainly because the NOS and lightly used OEM stuff is priced sky high anyway and this car is just never going to be that (I don't think) I'm not interested in fully restoring it anyway, my wife is daily driving it.  Maybe someday, like 10 years down the road maybe, IF the car is still worth something by then.
Right now I need a collection of stuff to correct some things like carb fuel lines, valve covers, spark plug wire looms, pulleys, a flat hood air cleaner assembly, some door handle pulls for deluxe interior, RS back up lights, some side market lights etc...might freshen the interior with new carpet, I think I'm going to need a console wire harness, and lots of minor things.
Nothing major but the list is long...and most of this stuff is just fine in reproduction form, as long as it functions.

Garage Talk / Any sales this weekend??

I have a long list of about $2,000 worth of nickel and dime stuff I need to order.  Was wondering if there are any cyber sales I might be missing that you guys may know about.  It's going to pay for me to shop around a bit.  Right now Heartbeat has slightly better prices on a few things, while NPD and Ricks have better prices on some other things.
Where else does everyone do their shopping?

Yep I always thought they were a little late myself.  And with my wife driving it I don't want her coming home telling me "oh the car needs gas" Only to find out I don't even have enough left to get back up to the station, lol.

That's it, thank you sir.  I couldn't remember M&H Electric for the life of me and all the searches I did wasn't turning this up for some reason.

Thanks again.

Yeah they make the modules adjustable, I've seen them before, I just can't remember where.  It was even discussed here before but as usual I can't find anything with a search.

It's just the little black box that mounts on the back of the gauges, it's not actually part of the gauge as in meaning "permanent."  It's removable.  There is one out there that can adjust the warning light to come on sooner or anywhere that suits you, and if I remember right they were priced decently compared to the original that runs about $65.

General Discussion / adjustable fuel gauge module?

Could someone be kind enough to tell me where they are finding those adjustable fuel gauge modules for the console gauge cars, as well as the harness for it?   I'm speaking of the module that illuminates the low fuel warning light, that you can adjust for the amount of fuel left.

I don't see it listed at the normal Camaro parts houses.

Thanks.

Those numbers make you appreciate what the boys in the F.A.S.T. series do on street tires. Yea, I know the guts are premium but they still look stock.
If you like this stuff have a look at the pure stock and factory stock classes.  It's a closer representation of what these cars can be capable of with attention to detail and running stock rubber.
I tried this years ago with my firebird.  Even these guys (especially now) are running pretty impressive times considering the stringent rules they have to abide with.   The fastest PS guys today can cut 60 foot times in the 1.6-1.7 range on reproduction Goodyears and Firestones.   F.A.S.T. is neat, but it's big dollar to be competitive in that class, however it's still cool to see what they can do on a stock tire.  I believe Lane Carey may still hold the record in F.A.S.T. with his BES built stroker ford.

I would tend to think that just about any shop in the Carolina's would have to be pretty good being in Nascar country.   I can't imagine a sub par machine shop staying in business very long in that part of the country.   I chat with a lot of guys online racing that are affiliated with quite a few of the Nascar teams down there working with them in different areas.  A lot of those guys branch off and start their own shops.  Whether it be chassis work or engine work, those guys are good at what they do.

Originality / Re: 69 Inside Rear View Mirror
« on: October 24, 2015, 01:55:37 PM »
The original stainless backed mirrors I see run through the 1970 model year.  1971 is when I've seen the black back mirrors as being common.  I believe it's because late in the 70 model year is when the DOT glare regulations mentioned above came into affect.  That's the pattern I've noticed anyway.
Both my 69 and 70 F-bodies have stainless rear view mirrors.  My 71-72 X-body and A-body model cars are black.

Where are you located?

Never heard of S&J.   There is only one engine builder I trust and whom I consider one of the best in the country and that's Tony Bischoff, BES.  Located in Southern Indiana.  He ships all over the country and out of the country and worth paying the expense for top notch work.

Others I have used is Koerner Racing engines in Tucson.  Excellent work and Jeff used to do all the carb work for Michael Waltrips Nascar team (when they used carbs) He also does most of the engine work for the Nascar Southwest Tour series. He knows his stuff, knows how to make power and make them last, and is meticulous about machine work.   He did my last 454, no complaints, excellent machine work and done in a few weeks.  I know some guys up in the North West Spokane area who have shipped there stuff back and forth to Jeff and were also extremely happy.

I've used Mike Zimmerman Racing Engines in Phoenix as well.  Excellent work, he also ships all around the country as well as out of the country building a lot of high dollar stuff. I recently had a Windsor done for a customer there and extremely happy with the work, had it done in a month with custom spec roller and all the parts necessary for me to assemble.

All of these places have a dyno or access to one, which I highly recommend.   It's not cheap to do a motor and do it right.  Your quote of $3,000 for machine work and balancing is right in the ball park if you are supplying the block/heads/crank/rods.  Add another $1,000 if you want to go roller.

Never heard of S&J but maybe others here have.  I'm not from the North West either.  Definitely pays to ask around for quality work though.  I'll pay more for quality and not worry so much about saving $$$  if I know I'm going to get a better product in the end.

Very cool.  I don't know what Darrel's idea is for unrestored original cars but there are categories now to certify such cars with different levels of originality.   I've had a few unrestored cars over the years and still have a few left.  2 of them still show very well, and one I plan to have certified.
Usually it's a given to have normal wear items replaced.  I have a link around here somewhere I can find that lays it all out and what's accepted.  It's changed a bit over the last 10-15 years as you can imagine these cars keep getting older and getting harder to keep original.  Unrestored cars have really caught on lately.

Austin,  I think yours, ours, and others assumptions are probably correct, and that would answer your question.    I'd guess the build sheet likely didn't show what he was hoping to find.

Not all is lost, still a neat car, just not a high dollar car.
