General Discussion / Re: Anyone use the console conversion harness?
« on: December 09, 2015, 12:38:56 PM »
Thanks Pace, great suggestions.  You're right, I was reading through the instructions last night, very thorough and looks like a fair amount of work.  I know the console/gauges will stay for at least a while until the car is restored so I'll go through with it for the time being. Yes it's an RS, I'm reluctant to drill extra holes for the amp meter so I'll have to cross that road when I get there and make a decision.  If I don't see a viable option I'll likely run through the bulk head and just have to deal with that come removal time.   I will likely run an oil fitting to use both the light and the gauge like you mentioned.  I figure the light is already there so why not.

Progress has been slow, between other cars and jumping back and forth.  Engine is at machine shop now.  I'll post up and attempt pictures when I start to get deep into this thing, maybe start a post on total progress with hopes of going full steam on it within the next month or so.  A lot to do just to get this thing back to road worthy again.

The conversion harness came in today with the rest of the parts.  It's more complete than I thought it would be, including a tach harness as well as complete instructions on how to run the wiring.  Looks like it will do the job just fine.

Oh I have every intention of restoring the car the way it came at some point in time (few years down the road)  Which means no gauges at all.  It may not have even come with a console at all, I still have yet to remove the interior for cleaning and inspect the floor for factory riv-nuts.
In the mean time I'm not doing anything to the car I can't reverse.  I'm not even knocking out the dash where the center clock would go because that's much more involved to revert back.  Thankfully someone didn't go that far.  So it's easy to look at and tell it's not a factory gauge car anyway, I'm not doing this to fool anyone, I just don't care to drive it without monitoring things.   So simply leaving the console/gauges someone else added decades ago wasn't a hard decision, I've already had a tachometer for the dash where the fuel gauge original resides, my dilemma is that it's an 8k tach and technically not correct for my build date, so I ordered a 7k tach instead.  I just want to hook all this up while at the same time not butchering original wiring under the dash, and I hoped the conversion harness accomplished that???
I figure if I didn't use this factory stuff I've had laying around and put the car the way it came (no gauges), I'd then have an aftermarket tach hanging off the column and a couple of aftermarket gauges hanging under the dash (which my wife doesn't like) Because I can't stand not knowing what's going on, lol.  So the factory stuff will get used for now until she gets tired of driving it.  LOL yeah they have a way of influencing us at times  ;D

Just curious how it worked out.  I'm referring to the harness made to convert a non console gauge car to console/gauges..
Mine is a non gauge car however 30-something years ago someone stuck an original gauge console in the car.  I'm not certain they were ever hooked up so on my ordering spree I decided to grab one of these conversion harnesses just in case as well as a console harness to go with it, just in case.  My wife decided since the console was already in the car, lets use it.

I'm surprised you found that through NCRS because I was just talking about this on the forum about mine, and according to their main page at the bottom, your serial number falls into that lump they claim they don't have documents for.
So maybe there is hope for me still.

Thanks for explaining that Mark.  I'd never heard it explained in detail as to why or when and never really read much of anything about it that was very clear in any book.  So I appreciate that.
I guess what puzzled me was that the narrow 68 spoiler was still being used through Dec as I'm told.  Yet the 68 stripe spacing was gone long before that from your description.  I don't recall that I've ever seen a 69 with the 68 spoiler and 69 spaced stripes before.

As far as the D96 stripes on a Z, I think it was William here that explained that very clearly not too long ago, that the D96 was most likely still an option on an RS Z through December.  Something about a revise or cancellation didn't happen till January or something to that affect.  If I knew how to find that I'd post a link here.  I can't remember the details on it but it was probably the best and most thorough explanation I've seen about that to date.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I went ahead and ordered a pair of 255-60's for the back and 215-65's for the front.  The 255's seemed to fit the rear nicely, fills up wheel well space at my stock ride height and looked nice, yet I could still get my hand around it in various places so I think I'm good there.

The fronts I won't be sure until they get here but based off of what Lawrence said with his 235-60's rubbing on occasion with worn suspension, I may be okay with 215-65's that are slightly shorter and narrower.  I just couldn't bring myself to put anything smaller on the front and risk not filling up some wheel well space.  Hopefully it's a nice compromise.  If they rub slightly then I'll live with it.  My RS inner fender shields already have holes worn in them from the previous owner 30+ years ago so I'm not too overly concerned with it, lol.   I just wanted to make sure I had a front tire that gave me a good chance of working in case I ever decided to replace those shields.

Lol, they seem to be all over the place, when you read that it goes back and forth.  I'll have to go back and read that again but I'm not so sure they even came to an agreement as to when the narrow rear stripe on 69's went away and the wide rear stripe was phased in.

For what it's worth, the original rear stripes on my 12D 69 are the wide ones.   This is a no spoiler car which may have made a difference because from what I understand from reading that, if mine were to have a rear spoiler it would be the 68 variety and also have narrow rear stripes, however the original stripes on my car are definitely wide.  Maybe being no spoiler had something to do with that.

Very much appreciated Gary.  I will send her an email in the morning and wait anxiously for a reply.
Thanks,

There is enough of the original stripes left on mine to measure both front and back, I just haven't gotten to that point with the car yet.  It's a 12D Norwood car, if that helps you at all I'll measure it.

But I'm willing to bet that you might find mild variances depending on plant and time frame at that specific plant which probably explains why Jerry sees one thing and the AIM states another.  Something like this is not uncommon at all.  If you want to be technically correct it would be best to find an original example from the same plant that is at least within a couple weeks of your build.  Because I highly doubt that all stripes measured exactly the same between 20,302 69 Z28's built at 2 different plants.

Gary that would be extremely helpful and much appreciated if you could do that.   I think you're right and would make more sense to just shoot him an email and politely enquire about it rather than go through the whole process only to find out it was all for not.

Just shoot me a pm when you get a chance.  Thanks
Larry

Is that possible Gary?   I just didn't want to be a bother to them if I was in fact reading that statement correctly.

Good idea providing both cars have the same size tires.

I'd measure mine to compare as well in hopes it would give me an idea of what might fit, but right now I have small front tires on it that hold air just so it will roll around, so my measurement wouldn't even be close to what may be considered stock.

Okay thanks, I just wanted to be sure.  That's an awfully big list of cars.
