General Discussion / Re: red on red 69 Z at mecum

Restored or aftermarket parts regardless, I kind of like it anyway.  Refreshing to see one with a flat hood, no spoilers, no console and no gauges.

On the firewall,, I don't recall seeing originals like that with body color up there, plus that looks too neatly done anyway, like it's been masked.
Mine being frost green with black stripes hasn't been tinkered with in that area.  The top of my cowl is black and appears to me to be more of a gloss black, then it transitions to semi gloss as it makes the turn down to the firewall itself.  To be sure I'll have to clean that area thoroughly so I can't be certain of it just yet but first appearance looks to me like 2 different blacks, could be an illusion of 30 years of dirt though.   Remnants of the PBT stamps are still visible as well, in orange.

Bryon,  What I have matches you pictures, so I feel better knowing that when I do restore the car I have the stuff to make it what it should be.  (somehow going through my stuff I wound up with 2 complete headliner kits, but oh well) Thanks for the extra effort and posting pics.

OK, on a laptop screen now.  On the door panels, yes, you can see that was added. Note the material above the chrome strip.

And yes, that's not the right hounds tooth. Here is original.  Photo credit, 69Pace.

Give me a few and I'll climb the mezzanine and see what I have in the box.

I'll have to dig the new covers down again and have a close look.   These are covered in 30 years of AZ dust and dirt but I think you're right, they'll clean up okay, well enough to drive and enjoy for a while.

Okay I'll give this a shot.  I'm not good at taking pics and even worse at posting so I hope this works.

Thanks for the heads up, I feel better now that I don't think I have to go out and buy yet another set of $500 door panels.  Here at first glance I thought they were wrong, lol.  Now looking closer at the current panels, that houndstooth does feel squishy as if there might be carpet underneath.
Don't mind the missing dash pad, it was broken so it's sitting on the roof, I have a new one going in, and I'm fixing the lock on the glove box.  From there I think the plan is going to be leaving the interior alone, just pulling it all out for a good cleaning.  Driver seat bolster has a tear and some wear.  Since the plan right now is to let my wife drive and enjoy it, I'm going to leave all the new interior boxed up and save it for the restoration.  Just going through the drivetrain, brakes etc..so it drives again, and enjoy it for a while before it's restored and becomes another fixture in the garage like the rest of my junk.  It's been sitting long enough, we want to have some fun with it for a while.  Unfortunately my time with it is slow as I'm too busy with customer cars.  Hope this helps clear up the confusion.

I can attempt to post some pics later this afternoon or early evening, heading to an archery tournament this morning.

Funny, never really paid attention to it, car has been sitting since the mid 80's untouched until now I'm finally digging into this thing.  The new interior kit is also about that old and I never unpackaged it until now and just noticed the black carpet on the bottom of the panels on the new kit.   I rarely ever see white deluxe houndstooth Camaros in person so comparing is nearly impossible around here.  Matter of fact I can't remember the last time I saw one, most Camaros have black interior.  But I'll say with certainty this car hasn't been touched in 30+ years so if the lower door panels were tinkered with it would have been very early on.

Wish I could track down the original owner and ask some questions.

General Discussion / Question on deluxe door panels
« on: December 12, 2015, 01:02:34 PM »
My 69 is originally equipped with white deluxe houndstooth, still original and unrestored and intact.  I've had a complete deluxe interior kit wrapped up for years, I had planned to replace all the interior.  I unpackaged it the other day to find out the deluxe door panels have black carpet along the bottom.

My original door panels on the car have a houndstooth pattern along the bottom that matches the seat inserts, it's not black carpet.

I never really paid that much attention to it until now.  I'm pretty certain this interior has never been tampered with.  So which is correct?

I've looked around at door panels and can't seem to find them with houndstooth on the bottom.  Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks.

Glad to hear that John.  They came in today and I just got done mounting the 215-65's on the front.  They look to clear everything with a little room to spare so I think I'm going to be okay.  I have a solid inch from the front plastic actuator covers when turned full lock, and I it looks like even more room than that at the rear of the fender.  At 12 o'clock it looks close with the wheels turned but should be okay.

Won't know until I actually drive it, but before that happens I'm pulling the control arms for new bushings, and check everything else out.  Desert SW is horrible on rubber parts.

Very cool you guys were into that.  That's all I did as a kid, and my father too.  I have models here dating back into the early to mid 60's, a few may be as old as the 1950's.  It was a passion I picked up from my father, used to enter model building contests and have several trophies.

Bill, I bought that same 69 RS Z I bought from Hobby Lobby and my son built it a couple years ago.

I very carefully boxed up all mine and my fathers and stashed them away years ago, they fill half the shed.  I wouldn't be surprised if there were more than 100 of them.

General Discussion / Re: how much do you think my 67 camaro rs worth?
« on: December 10, 2015, 05:27:11 PM »
What the original drivetrain would have been would determine in my eyes what a real value might be.  Nice thing about 67's is most of the pertinent stuff is listed on the cowl.   Without a group 4 on there that Cook mentioned, it's likely a base model RS in which case it could have been a 2 barrel power glide car from the start.  Still desirable to own but won't bring the bigger money in my opinion compared to an original 4 barrel stick car, even if the car now has some other form of drivetrain in it.

I've been looking at 67-68 RS's for a while now and being patient I've found 2 different 67's, both were L30/M20 cars so they weren't your basic RS's.  Both presentable and rust free SW cars, complete, one ran and one didn't. Both were priced in the upper teens.  I almost bought one of them.  I've seen nice examples in the mid 20's that were turn key and drive, and almost bought another  really super nice 67 RS with it's original 327 2 barrel and power glide, white with blue guts, for $18,500.  Again, this one being nicer than the other 2 I mentioned, but a base model RS with a 2 barrel/glide tends to bring the price down a bit.

My opinion it just depends on what the market will bring in your area, but they are out there to be had reasonable if you look around.  Really need pics and details for others here to give a more informed idea.

General Discussion / Component ID steering questions
« on: December 10, 2015, 12:51:57 PM »
I posted in another section about checking steering components so I decided to look through the component ID section and sure enough, some details are listed there.   This posed another question.
Z28's with and without power steering are listed but only the power steering examples list the part numbers for the shorter steering arms. 3954875 and 76 for LH and RH respectively.
Non power steering Z's are shown as using the shorter steering arms as well but no part numbers shown.  Are they the same between power and non power??

Another question.  Both power and non power are shown to use the same 5.8" pitman arm 3953227 but then it goes on to say that power steering and non power steering  pitman arm splined holes for the attachment to the steering box were different sizes.
They have the same part number??

Originality / Re: Can one determine if a VN built Z/28 is real?
« on: December 10, 2015, 12:32:28 PM »
I believe some LOS cars have been reported to have the X codes grease penciled into the bulk head behind the back seat.  Not sure if they all did or if there was a time frame when they may have started doing this, but always worth a look.

Steering components like pitman arms and steering arms are also worth looking into.  It's not definitive as this stuff can also be changed or optioned, but it's something most people almost never change on a clone and could provide you with another clue.

General Discussion / Re: Anyone use the console conversion harness?

LOL, yeah you would think after all these years and 20,302 69's made that this simple stuff would be all cleared up by now   Especially considering the number of them that have crossed that block over the years.

I like/enjoy BJ though and look forward to it every year.  Not so much from an auction standpoint, I treat it more like a giant car show.

Careful, you might talk me into purchasing a clock to finish it off  ;D

No paperwork on the car, but I do know it's a no frills car.  Other than the RS package and deluxe houndstooth, it's your basic Z.  Clues tell me it's a flat hood car, no spoiler car, and with the blank center pod filler above the steering column still intact with the "Camaro" script I believe it to be a no gauge car.  It may or may not have had a plain console, I need to pull the current gauge console to look for clues.  Other than that it has no options, not even power steering.

I always thought it was odd to order deluxe houndstooth with it and not spring for gauges and console, but I understand quite a few were built that way.  Almost looks out of place to me to have fancy interior and not have a gauge/console setup.  Especially with all that simulated wood grain across the dash.
