Thanks Mike!  I do have another question for you - What does the "UOIT" in your signature stand for?

And Thanks to Bullit65!

Restoration / Re: PBT stamp height
« on: October 03, 2016, 07:00:43 PM »
Through my discussion with several very knowledgeable people, I've come to believe only the Norwood factory used the PBT stamps. Furthermore, in 1967 they were stamped way out on the cowl area where they aren't visible once the car is assembled. For reasons unknown to me, they were moved further inboard in 1968 where they are visible above the heater and master cylinder areas.

Hopefully someone will jump in and back me up on this.

Buzz if you mean the small clip that attaches to the intake manifold and holds the vacuum advance hard line, mine appears to have been black, or possibly a dark phosphate finish, originally. However, I'd be interested in other's responses because I believe that this was for engines that had aluminum intakes, and on iron intakes, the same clip may have been painted orange.

Yes, that's the little piece I'm speaking of. My intake is of the iron variety and I'm betting it is (was) painted orange. But I'm glad you entered the discussion, because I just love talking Chevys, and in particular, Camaros! So Chevrolet must have left those unpainted on the aluminum intakes, just like the engine lift brackets were painted silver on the aluminum intakes and orange on the iron intakes. Very interesting! Thanks for the post!
I have several of these clips off iron intake engines and they are all orange. I cannot comment on the aluminum intake.
Ah! Thanks James! I'm betting that at least ONE of those take offs were painted at the factory. I'm sure mine was tossed out when the second owner had a bigger camshaft, a Holley carb and Accel distributor installed.

Restoration / Distributor Vacuum Tube Holder

Greetings Members!

Can someone verify for me the factory finish of distributor spark advance vacuum tube holder? I believe it to be painted orange from the factory as the "AIM" does not list it as one of the parts added after the motor production line.

Thanks everyone!

Restoration / Re: 67 RS/SS 396 Front Coil Springs
« on: February 05, 2016, 10:31:17 PM »
You can buy the typical springs people suggest for your model, and maybe get a similar ride height and spring rate, but the number of coils, etc will likely not even be close.   What I did after rejecting the OTS springs available, was to contact Coil Spring Specialties in Kansas.  I sent them my one good unbroken spring (an EY) from my Z28, and had them make me two new springs to match the unloaded height, coil wire size, number of coils, and spring rate from that one.  I can supply contact information if you can't locate them.  My contact there was Kevin Crane.

Hi Gary!

Can you tell me what the turnaround  time was and the cost? I do still have the unbroken spring - so your suggested solution is feasible.  I've found their website and contact information. Thanks for the reply and suggestion.

Restoration / 67 RS/SS 396 Front Coil Springs
« on: February 05, 2016, 08:22:54 PM »
What did the factory use for front coil springs on the 67 RS/SS 396 cars? I discovered mine had a broken front coil when I disassembled the front end. So I need to order front springs. Where can I get a set of quality made front coil springs for my car? Is there such a thing as GM Licensed Restoration Parts front coil springs? I've come to trust the GM Licensed parts and believe them to be the best thing to buy during a restoration 50 years later. My goal is to have this car completed by it's 50th birthday.

The car is a real, RS/SS L35 coupe with no other factory options other than a radio and manual front disc brakes. The AIM manual says it had YG springs or YJ springs with the F41 RPO. Both the L35 and L78 cars got the same springs. Did the SS cars come with the F41 springs? My front coil tags were long gone by the way and no build sheet was found - so I'm a bit lost. What should I get and from where?

Thanks and appreciation for all those who reply!!

What color are the governor cover and the speedometer sender supposed to be? And I'm still needing the color of the ID  tag.

Hopefully, Jerry will find an interest in this thread and let us know. A person on another forum said the '67 CC tags were dark green, but unfortunately, no picture accompanied his post.

Mike,

I did it myself. I recreated the artwork and then had a cliché made from it. The cliché is then used in a special pad printing process. The cliché is essentially a negative of the artwork which allows the ink to flow through it. Sort of like a stencil but with a much higher degree of accuracy that allows for small letter (and number) printing.

Bob

WOW!! Bob, you're tag looks FANTASTIC!! My idea was similar to yours - but you actually knew the process to use (which I didn't). Who would I contact to have this process done? A custom decal shop?

Mike, you stated your '67 tag is yellow and yet '68 CC tags are yellow. Can someone explain this?

Restoration / 67 Turbo 400 ID TAG and Detailing
« on: January 05, 2016, 08:57:50 PM »
Greetings Everyone!

Does anyone have a picture of a Turbo 400 CC transmission tag? If not, does anyone have a picture (or link) of a 67 T400 tag from the higher horsepower usage CX trans?  My research so far suggests the '67 tag was dark green. If nothing else, a color representation of the dark green color used would be useful if nothing else is available. My hope is to assemble enough elements to make a decal to place over what remains of my ID tag.  Also, does anyone know what color the case stamps were? Were they also dark green or another color? Any help in this project would be greatly appreciated!

I am SO glad I read this thread. Because at this moment, my '67 is on the rotisserie with the firewall painted semi gloss black and the PTB stamps are in the sealed package waiting to be used.

Originality / 1967 RS hood release handle black-out
« on: May 25, 2015, 02:48:16 AM »
Hello Group!

I'm in the midst of my '67 RS/SS 396 restoration. my question is the finish of the hood release and handle. I know the hood release was finished from the factory with grey phosphate. I've now learned that the hood release handle was blacked out with semi-gloss black.

My question is this: Where does the semi-gloss black paint end? I want to get this correct.

Greetings members,

I'm new to the forum. This "dimple" rod thing is new to me. Are we referring to the reinforcing gusset that bridges up from the I beam to the wrist pin? Is that the "dimple" that the name refers to?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Fuel pump codes
« on: January 18, 2014, 10:12:44 PM »
I hope the mods don't mind me resurrecting this old thread and dusting it off.

I have a few questions concerning AC fuel pumps codes that I'd like to have answered. I have a motor date stamp of May 24, '67. My fuel pump has a date code of FH which would be June of '68. By what I've picked up from research and speaking with people, the motor should be dressed with components that are date stamped roughly a month earlier. So by my cyphering - that would call for a fuel pump date stamped as DG or possibly EG, correct?

I've also seen individuals refer to non-original pumps as being "service replacement correct". Are these replacement components something that a judge would view as acceptable? Can someone explain this to me?

Are there also AC pumps that were julian dated? If so, when to when?

Thanks to all that respond.
