Originality / 68 Transmission Tunnel cut out identification
« on: August 17, 2014, 07:05:03 AM »
What can you tell me about this picture?
Can we tell what type of transmission (auto/ 3speed / 4speed manual) by the trans tunnel cutout?
Also can anyone identify the type of Hurst shift I have on the side of the gearbox?

My old SAAS wheel I want to use. They haven't made this type for many years AFAIK.

Mild Modifications / Any 68 steering wheel hubs (boss kit) in Australia?
« on: August 11, 2014, 12:09:38 PM »
My existing Early N30 wheel is so cracked it's dangerous.

I have my old 12", fat rim, leather, 3 spoke SAAS wheel from my youth (let's just say that was a few years back now) and would love to fit it to my '68 Camaro. It is a 6 hole wheel but I need a suitable hub/mount, preferably in Australia. Importing from the US is too expensive and long to then find it won't fit.

Has anyone in Aus found a suitable, 6 hole type hub? My '68 General Motors Holden HK hub that I used has a different spline.

I'll post a pic of the wheel I want to put on 2morro.

General Discussion / Re: Chicken or the Egg?

Hey Mike & Gary,
I thought the same thing but if Chevrolet referred to them as RS/SS I'm reconsidering....though I still think it SHOULD have been SS/RS. :)

There's another thread that I argued that SS was the model and RS was the option, therefore SS/RS should be correct (not that I am any authority on the subject). Another Gentleman corrected me stating his Father used to sell them and ALWAYS referred to them as RS/SS.
Well I was just watching some Camaro.org YouTube videos before bed (as you do), and watched the "1968 Chevrolet Communication kit, Sept 1967".

Here's a still from the video that may clear the debate up once and for all.
Note the 4 models...Base | RS | SS | RS/SS

Emblem to Bumble Bee stripe reference for anyone looking....

Lining up the 396 emblem locator pins to holes on the picture, I can see the badge is same size as width of stripe and centred.

1970 Holden HG Belmont sedan. The only thing I still have is an emblem.

Thanks Darrell, great pics. It confirms to me (until proven otherwise) that the Bumble Bee stripe & emblem  are really that close to the front of the fender, matching the Classic Industries emblem templates. From my own mock ups, it looks like the stripe is the same width as the emblems, lining up edge to edge.

I've also learnt that since the LHS emblem has front locator pin further back, many people use the RHS emblem on LHS fender to improve it sitting flush with fender curve because it's first pin is right at the front.

Interesting to see the stripe does not continue to the bottom of the fender.

As the Hockey stripe fender is right hand side, it looks like the emblem sits further back then a bumble bee stripe & emblem (assuming RHS BB emblem with locator pin at front of number)

Long shot, but do you know the build month of the car the Bumble Bee guard came off? Mine is an 11B, before the Hockey stripe became default on SS.

Thanks again for the pics. They are the best "original & close up" I've come across.

I would like to refer you to the below post.
Mine is 11B and the post refers to a 11E

Is it possible that on a '68 the D91 for pre-Jan 68 WAS slightly different?
AIM shows D91 outer stripe joining and if barraza has pictures of his Dad's car with this, perhaps it was that way for early 68's?
Does anyone have anything conclusive from an original pre Jan 68 SS?

Quoted from above link..
".......My 68 is a 11E build ss-350 with the bumble bee stripe. My dad bought it new.
.............But where it gets interesting .............. Another anomaly is the AIM stripe D91 shows the outer pinstripe connected front to rear on the portion of the stripe below the engine size emblem. The stencils are not made this way, and no one repaints it this way, but old pictures of my car clearly show these two stripe connected as per the AIM drawing. ......"

Originality / 68 396 fender emblem position
« on: June 26, 2014, 11:24:28 AM »
Hi All,

The front sheet metal on my 68 SS had been replaced (front end crash?) at some time and I'm about to drill the holes for the 396 fender emblems.

I bought the Classic Industries templates "Classic Templates" / "CHQ Reproductions" and when placing over the side marker bezel and lining the template up with "Approx end of fender" and "fender to bottom section", the emblem is less than 1" (20mm) from the edge of the fender. This looks to close to me.

When I check where the D91 stripe (not yet painted) should be as per the AIMs, the emblem is no where near the centre of the stripe. The 396 is much closer to front edge of fender than the stripe edge is.

Can anyone post a picture of a 68 D91 stripe with 396 emblems and/or provide measurements?

Cheers.

Restoration / Re: Red Line tyre measurements 68 SS RPO-PW8

Thanks for the photos & measurements Mike S. There's are blokes out here who paint the red line on the current tyre so at least I can get a "factory look" without having to but new tyres.

Thanks Mike S & 68camaroz28.
Mike S - Pics of the tire would be great. Can you also measure the distance from rim to redline please? Lakeholme says Inch & 7/16' so a second opinion could confirm that for me.

Thanks Frost69. I hope I'm not hijacking this thread. If so let me know and I'll stop or start a new one.
From the link you gave me, I was able to find a bit more info on the salesman at the original dealer and found his daughter on FaceBook. I've sent her a message and hopefully she responds and can put me in touch with her father. Some old photos or stories about the dealership and that era would be fascinating.
