Restoration / Grill questions
« on: April 22, 2013, 08:43:55 PM »
I like the solid black grill surround look. That said #1 is it painted or is it just black plastic. If painted and the egg crate section is now black plastic should the stainless trim also get painted and I gather the black paint should be a flat of satin black to match the non painted egg crate? I have seen so many variations I am just not sure. I see in the " Ground Up" catalog the whole unit is either black or silver plastic with a stainless trim. Plus do the new stainless screws get painted?  What do you guys recomend

69Z (Gary) I agree to a point I guess. Theres a mustang in the paint bay next to mine where I do alot of the work before the painter finishes it. The owner found it in a field and wanted to restore it. The short version is as of now due to finding more and more rust and its not even close to paint because they are still assembling it. Theres about 2% original parts! I think the main firewall is there and not even all of it. Now what is this? Preservation? Restoration? or a new car? This is my point.
BTW can I throw my name in the hat for your car too? LOL

F.Y.I In Rolls Royce production when they ran out of anything they used the next thing which often was even a different manufacture. So today you dont know what even is or was the correct part as no numbers or finishes or parts ever matched! In thr run of Silver Shadows Ones 1965 to 1976 for instance they produced about 28,000 cars and theres at least 4 different EGR systems, maybe more of the cruise control locations and types and on and on. At least with GM you have some type of standardazation! I love these discussions it helps us all greatly.

1st let me say that for the last 15+yrs I have been a national Rolls Royce and Bentley judge plus Ihave a successful building restoration co and.  a car restorer. That all said I have lots of personal opinions on this subject and you ad car owners can do whatever you wantanf thats ok too. So here I go.
In my opinion taking any car and replac sding most items is not restoration but a rebuild. Keeping the car as origional as possible when posible is really preservatipn. I have seen a 1959 rolls silver cloud in perfect irigional conditional. The owner ordered it drove it a few months and died his friend bought it and kept iy mai.tained in perfect co.ditional all these years but nit driven much. Then I see cars driven maintained fir 40 50 years in perfect condition just repairig what needd done.
With this in mind we all tend to over rebuild/restore these cars.
I am very impressed with this site and your dedacation to trying to do the right thing. You all have been and continue to be very helpful to all who ask and thats what this hobby us all about.
Remember we do not own anything we,are just the current caretakers of them and some day they will all have different owners so tread lightly.

In a 69 trunk, where the floor meets in inner quarter panel there is a appox 1/2" gap was that always like that or does seam filler go there before spraying the trunk floor?

Thanks George, thats pretty much how it is in most cars I have owned with small changes to the edges. From    production point it makes sense too. My confusion came in from looking at all the ebay cars and most have the black into the upper fender corners! Even the high end so called ;correct" cars. Being a rolls bentley judge on alot of coachbuilt cars I always need to understsnd what they had in mind.
My car was built lemans blue but was changed to hugger orange many ys,ago. The inside of y cowl was all flat black that I sanded out and have painted the HO. I di not want the correct color but I want my color and parts done cirrectly. In Rolls circles we dont care about original paint but we care that its done properly and high quailty. Jim

I realized why I theres no sign if window washers. Its because someone replaced the inner fender liners and theres no mount holes. Plus they removed all hoses and squirters.

Originality / Re: Z-28 fender emblems.
« on: March 29, 2013, 12:10:41 AM »
Thanks John. I have all my proper emblems now and I have most improper "Z" tags removed so I can see how they all line up now. I was trying to get the info before I ordered anything and the nice folks at "Ground Up' took the time to get old Z emblems and match the holes up to the SS emblems for me before I ordered them. I give them a big "A" for customer service and an "A" to you guys on the forum for all your help so far. I know when I get to the cut off emergency brake cables Ill be asking Q"s for the the usual missing info in the assembly book!
