Maintenance / Re: Oil Pan leaks... ugh..
« on: December 03, 2013, 09:10:26 PM »
Sure you built a motor or 2 Gary, follow your procedure for tightening oil pan fasteners : crossing inner to outer , 2 step. I use a 1/4 inch drive and just have a feel when tight. Follow the supplied directions as not to crush the washers.  Of course a lite skim of form a gasket won't hurt. However I was always taught to only apply appliance side and allow gasket to work on engine side. We have not had the pan off in 2 years---bone dry. We also run an engine diaper--no sign of oil on the pad. Results may vary but I've by far had the best luck with the one piece. Only mist I get is from the breather on the trans, automatic ,as should be expected.

Beat me to the punch again ! I've had great success with Felpro 1 piece gaskets. Also the impregnated valve cover gaskets perform wonderful. Need no Permatex.   we run high oil pressure in the race engine plus a stepped out Milodon drag pan--lots of oil flowing through with no leaks.

Ditto :D  Wonderful thing " learning with your kids "  5 hour drive coming back from Big Rapids yesterday--wonderful to hear my son telling me about what he's learning up there with the same enthusiasm as when we used to do holiday book reports ! Not much greater a parent could be thankful for. Everybody have a good one.

Gotta let these carbureted engines "warm up". In todays world of EFI . often forgotten. Glad to see you may have solved it !

You posted as I was typing. .060 is a large gap ,more than we run on the race car. Sorry ,those early chokes I do not know how to adjust the speed in opening. Later models were easy +/-  2 hold down screws. I do not run a choke, no cold driving.

I'm sure dozens do on this site.

Get on Holley's website ,tech ,you will learn everything you need.

Appears some variation in gap---your wider gaped plugs appear to be the culprits. If your running a stock ignition it doesn't have the power to "jump" the gap---spark weakens. Try a new set ( as suggested ) of Autolites, set per manual. I'm not going to suggest a change in heat range due to a few look good. You can check your wires with an ohm meter--also watch it running in the dark to see if any wires are arching. One step at a time, work from your plus back in your trouble shooting ,isolate systems. Wow, like I posted could be as simple as a fouled plug ;)

Killer Z...What dealer was it from? Kind of reminds me of my 68.......

Parts came out of Milad's--Not sure of Michigan dealer. Ordered while in Vietnam so who ever was involved with that program. I'm going to meet with the original owner soon(when we are both off) I heard he has some paperwork and maybe some pics. No detective work, these guys are around ,just have to schedule.

Good for you, like to see some pics. Really can not think of a better car to make the summer car show circuit in.

56 less than expected,  certainly not one paint and garage kept 44 years--many good points , not what I'm looking for.

Had a 6 banger with a glide in an old Malibu in high school---no show car. Ran great and really was not hard on the wallet for fuel.

There used to be a brown Nomad that ran for years at Norwalk--probably still around ,most are, that had a 327---would rev to the sky. One which sticks in my mind I would stop to watch. I got one on the stand--a must have bowtie.

No ,shipped as a console/stripe delete "Plane Jane" Z ( per # 1 owner) however I have found some discrepancies in the story ,anyway #2 added the hideaways (circa 67) ,lower valiance , cowl hood with RS release , 4:88's.

Options were fold down back seat , " off road cam " , 4:10's or 11's always mix with Ford.  Dealer installed Sun Tac in fuel gauge location, supposed headers ordered and supplied with delivery but they are 1 3/4 super comp hookers , who knows ,period correct. Very low stamp. Also I spoke years ago with the man who shot the cowl hood in 69 when it arrived at the dealer(ohio). The flat hood is striped, the rest of the car was dead on per the assembly manual and CHP reference down to the overspray--many pics and measurements have been taken by my paint man to replicate the " imperfections " from the factory. If it was shot after delivery ,my guy said it was done perfect to match. Technically as far as "stock " goes with this one ,it rolled under it's own power from Norwood to the trailer ,off the trailer into the dealer ( Detroit ) and driven to Ohio ( pump was off and manifolds plugged before it left Michigan)---it has always been a car to enjoy ,and no it's 1/4 mile days are not quite done just yet. Honestly shy of the GM rear ring/pinion gears these Z's and 302's can take a ton of abuse the way they rolled off the line .--taking one down in the mid-high 12's is nothing more than a brisk walk for it---with a few things done for safety. They were mid 11 cars with head work and stump pulling rear gear ratios. I think the point bounce acted as a rev limiter ,and when that problem was solved , some met there demise. They are hard pulling engines in the upper R's that do not go "flat". With no restraint one could be over spun. What Jerry is doing with that 67 is something to be appreciated. 11's are one thing--no easy task putting a "heavy' cast iron 2.02 car in the low 10's. Banging gears none the less. And yes my rods have been shot peened.

Restoration / Re: First attempt at Zinc Plating

Product came in yesterday from Palmetto , included was a page each of detailed instruction ,adding what has been tried and proven by you guys, I'm really looking forward to start this weekend with some bolts first.

What also arrived yesterday were my parts from "Red Gorilla Restorations" even mailed some change back ! They look great , better than the pics. Even more important to me is another guy out there who not only can be trusted with your irreplaceable parts ,but treats them with the same detail as his own---speaks volumes. I've followed this site many years( almost since it's inception" before becoming active . I've noticed a pattern of the same people--always positive and quick to offer help. Sending my parts out to Darrell was sort of like "paying it forward" good luck in your endeavors ,use me as a reference.
